Hold Riot Leaders Accountable

Editor, News-Register:

On Jan. 6, 2021 President Donald Trump was the leader of the seditious mob that instigated a violent coup d’etat against the United States. Trump’s sedition was in trying to secure continued power without winning the 2020 election.

Trump’s bombast oratory incited a mob of thousands to surge the U.S. Capitol building where the nation’s elected representatives had gathered to perform their constitutional duty of counting electoral votes and confirming the election of Joe Biden as president.

Trump urged backers to march to the Capitol and “fight like hell …”

The United States Criminal Code, according to Lawrence Tribe, et al, writing in the New York Times, “prohibits inciting an insurrection or giving aid or comfort to those who do, as well as conspiracy to forcibly prevent, hinder or delay the execution of any law of the United States. The code also makes it a crime to corruptly impede any official proceeding or deprive citizens of their constitutional right to vote.”

These laws are well established for bringing Donald Trump and his coup followers such as Mark Meadows, Steve Bannon, Rudy Giuliani, John Eastman, Sydney Powell, Jim Jordan, Mo Brooks, Scott Perry, other Congressional Trump sycophants, the Hillard Hotel War Room crowd, Fox News senior commentators, and many other leading insurrectionists to justice (700 of the Capital rioters have already been indicted.)

How is it even possible to contemplate — the Big Lie — allowing Trump and the rest of the sedition leaders off the hook, when six people died, 140 were injured, police officers were assaulted, the confederate flag was paraded in our sacred seat of democracy, and multi-millions in damage was inflicted to our hallowed house of Liberty?

If they had succeeded with their coup they would have destroyed our great country and replaced it with a fascist dictator.

The rule of law must prevail not just for Jan. 6 accountability and criminal events before and after then, but also to make sure we secure the future for our blessed basic freedoms and democracy.

We can not, we must not, ever allow this attempted overthrow of our democracy to happen again.

So arrest and charge the leading insurrection criminals, especially Trump, and put them in prison for many years.
