Tariffs Would Harm Trade Between U.S. and Canada
Editor, News-Register:
As an American who frequently visits Canada, I am very concerned by the incoming Trump administration’s proposed tariffs against Canada (“Trump Threatens Sweeping New Tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China on Day 1,” November 26). Canada is our largest trading partner with which we share the longest international frontier and have a long history of friendly relations.
Tariffs are necessary to address trade imbalances with nations such as China which exports far more to the US than it imports from the US. This is just not the case with Canada which has been trading with us for centuries.
I call upon the Trump administration not to kill trade between our two nations by enacting punishing tariffs on Canada (starting a trade war) but to instead enhance trade by (e.g.) reopening the Keystone pipeline project which was illogically scuttled by the Biden administration.
