Jefferson County Library Levy Deserves Support
Editor, News-Register:
I love libraries, especially our local Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County. When I talk to different people in the area, I am heartened by how many also have an appreciation of how lucky we are to have seven branches (soon to be eight) and a bookmobile serving our community. On the other hand, I am often dismayed at how many people are unfamiliar with all of the ways that the library can enhance their lives. Oh, sure, everyone knows that you can check out books, movies and music CDs. Many people know that you can also access online resources like audio books, magazines, newspapers and other media. But did you know that you can now check out things? You can borrow Wi-Fi hotspots, museum passes, birdwatching kits, traffic cones and much more.
Do you need to print, copy, fax or just have access to a computer? Want to make a poster, engrave something or digitize an old VHS tape? Head to the library. Looking to learn or socialize? The library hosts a slew of clubs, programs, classes, activities and events for every age group.
I’ve only scratched the surface, but I hope I mentioned at least one thing that you did not know before. I’ll end my list by reminding everyone that you can go to the library to get documents notarized free of charge, pick up tax forms and even register to vote.
So … speaking of voting, there is an important election on Nov. 4 this year. One of the measures on the Jefferson County ballot is a renewal of the PLSJ library levy. Just so you know, this is not a new tax, but rather a continuation of what is already in place. The levy provides crucial funding to keep all of the branches open, fully staffed and capable of maintaining the same quality and variety of services we can all enjoy.
I know that it can sometimes be hard to get motivated to vote, but it is one of our most significant civic duties and our amazing local library is certainly worth the effort. Early voting has already started, so please make a plan to cast your ballot and make sure that your adult friends and family do as well.
Thank you for joining me in voting ‘yes’ on the PLSJ levy renewal.
