Doing Kids a Disservice With School Calendar
Editor, News-Register:
The Republican Super Majority in the West Virginia Legislature makes no sense on education. Last year they made a heartfelt best effort by passing the third-grade success act, which would require additional instruction time for reading students struggling in the classroom.
Now, Senate Bill 890 passed without a single nay vote and only two no votes in the House of Delegates, sending the bill to Gov. Patrick Morrisey for his signature. The problem is that the new law will change the school calendar from its current 180 days of instruction to 900 hours of instructional time.
That makes it possible for 14 less school days in the classroom
To make matters worse, the bill will allow for four-day work weeks if local schools sign off. We all know the Board of Education is controlled by the teachers union, now united under one label.
Remember the teacher strike when the local boards all voted to pay striking teachers?
So beginning in July 2027, the four-day work week will be on the agenda of local board meeting.
Maybe someone is going to make a buck from charter schools. Down from 180 days, the new school calendar enrolling children in private schools where classroom instruction still would be offered.
Someone must have bellied up to bar!
