Nothing Gained With Political Callousness
Editor, News-Register:
In 2015, I watched then-candidate Trump mock disabled reporter Serge Kovaleski. I naively thought such cruelty would be disqualifying for a Commander-in-Chief. I was wrong.
Since then, we have witnessed a relentless tide: lie after lie, corruption, criminal conduct, and open misogyny. From the insurrection and the disparagement of our military to the dismantling of our Justice Department and the abdication of responsibility for climate change, the list is exhaustive. We have seen attacks on science, journalists, and judges, and citizens gunned down in plain sight without government accountability. Even the promise of avoiding foreign entanglement has broken with a war in Iran.
We have now come full circle with the president’s despicable remarks regarding Gov. Gavin Newsom’s dyslexia. Politics aside, what is gained by such callousness? Most of us live with a disability or care for someone who does. Yet, we have a president far from the bell curve of human decency.
If a colleague spoke this way at work, we would call them out. Why, then, do Sens. Capito and Justice, and Reps. Riley Moore and Carole Miller, remain silent in their workplace?
To our representatives: You are better than this. Do you really think that the president cares about anything other than your blind loyalty?
Your political legacies and your constituents would be far better served if you challenged this leadership while you still can.
We are depending on you to show true compassion.
