Looking at What Makes Nation Great

Editor, News-Register: I was in junior high school when my dad got real sick. They took him to a medical center and did a lot of tests. The doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong. Then a blood test intern who had arrived here from Korea on a student visa suggested a test for some disease that was common in his country but rarely appeared here. That test pointed out the problem. My dad got the appropriate medication and returned home healthy. What if Donald Trump had been president and deported the intern? Our country benefits from immigrants from different countries, ...

Hospital Closing a Tough Situation

Editor, News-Register: East Ohio Regional Hospital closes again! It is just plain wrong, as there is a need for this facility in Belmont County. I hate socialism but the need is there and somehow, some way EORH or some other entity needs to exist to fill the bill of health care for Eastern Ohio. Health care for profit will not work in Eastern Ohio as those that need it are not wealthy. Somebody help, please! Words fail me. Michelle Petri Wheeling

Wheeling Symphony a True Gem for City

Editor, News-Register: For 95 years, Wheeling has had the good fortune of having its very own Symphony Orchestra. The recent program, “Bravo Broadway,” was an absolutely captivating performance and, for those unable to attend, they missed an incredible evening.   The talent of the three vocalists combined with the energy and enthusiasm of the orchestra was inspiring and did indeed have the audience rising “to their feet shouting bravo” and applauding the outstanding concert. The Wheeling Symphony’s live music always offers a completely different experience than a ...

Anticipating Signs of Spring in Our Valley

Editor, News-Register: I am certain that I am not the only Wheeling-area resident who anticipates those green shoots popping up out of the ground, announcing that spring is here. This yearly tradition of seeing the beautiful bright yellow blooms of daffodils can’t help but make me smile — to see color and rebirth, in what was all previously a hill of brown. And this lovely green and yellow patch is growing. To whomever you are, living on West Gate/Gracie Drive, off of GC&P Road, thank you for planting those bulbs in your back yard for us to enjoy. The Bible Is Part of America’s History

Editor, News-Register: I would like to share some thoughts with our Ohio Valley neighbors regarding West Virginia lawmakers introducing a bill to acknowledge the Holy Bible as a foundational document. There are many who believe this is a violation of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, which guarantees religious freedom. It is not. But while opposition to the bill proclaims secularism, make no mistake, the Bible had a huge influence on our great country. A Google search will reveal that the most cited book in the founding era (1760-1805) was the Book of Deuteronomy, ...

Trump, Musk Not Good for America

Editor, News-Register: Perhaps the main reason as to why current President Donald J. Trump was victorious in the most recent US presidential election was based on his oft-repeated campaign promise that, if elected, he would resolve perhaps the most concerning issue facing the American people — massive inflation — on day one. However, the reality is indeed very far from the case. Inflation continues to climb and with President Trump’s plan to enact massive tariffs on our trading partners, the horrific impact of which to be felt by U.S. citizens, as a result of continuing out of ...
