Frontrunner Choice Baffling

Editor, News-Register: That Nikki Haley isn’t the GOP frontrunner says something very strange about that party. She has the requisite experience. She has clearly been the smartest candidate on the debate stage. She is a real conservative choice. Biden’s campaign must be terrified about running against a young and vibrant candidate. Surely that’s what Republican voters should prefer to four more years of Trump’s obvious mental decline and narcissism. Richard Steele Moundsville

Time To Put Our Country First

Editor, News-Register: When our members of Congress pat themselves on the back for jobs created during a certain period, most of which aren’t sufficient to support a family, why is it that we never hear about jobs lost, business closings, layoffs and bankrupt filings. It seems as if all they care about is making TV coverage and increasing their own wealth. If only they could quit fighting among themselves and do what’s good for the country instead of themselves. A few more years like this and people will not recognize this country. It would be great if we could get one good ...

New Season of ‘In God We Trust’

Editor, News-Register: The year end holidays are special. Reflection, gratitude, families and friends, gifting, feelings of “Peace On Earth” and vacations. With that sentiment, I am sad to express my disappointment with our nation’s leadership. As multiple global wars and attacks continue, and our borders are being invaded, leading to exorbitant expense, known and unknown dangers of disease, violence, terror, cultural changes and beyond. The Congress of the USA says “Holiday” … (they can’t say “merry Christmas”) … unconstitutional? We the People deserve ...

A Poem for Downtown Wheeling

Editor, News-Register: The hills and cliffs still bear the scars of where the Ohio once slashed at them. It is at the site of this attempted murder that the city rests, still asleep in its work clothes the crumbs of weathered roads and broken curbs littering its chest. Faded brick alleyways seep between buildings like old capillaries The Capitol Theatre wears the evening like a tux Old leather volumes ferment silently in a bookstore In bars, the carousing liturgy of stories being told some legend, some folklore. From the restaurant on the corner of Market and ...

A Deadly, Disqualifying Legacy

Editor, News-Register: A recent United Nations report documents 10,000 Ukrainian civilian deaths due to Russia’s aggressive war. That number is dwarfed by an estimated 15,000 Palestinian civilians killed in Israel’s military response to Hamas’ 1,200 murders Oct. 7. How then should we characterize the deaths of nearly 319,000 American civilians by what Brown University medical researchers call “Covid-19 vaccine-preventable deaths?” This devastating number is higher than a previous estimate by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Harvard School of Public Health, that ...
