Better Way To Manage the Herd?

Editor, News-Register: The tarnished Oglebay administration perpetuated luring deer from their natural habitat onto Oglebay property. Enforcing the NO FEEDING OF WILDLIFE is ignored. Therefore, the deer population on Oglebay grounds increased. Perhaps chasing or deterring the deer back into the woods would put this herd population in check. Deer returning to a natural habitat decreases the deer population and helps the environment at Oglebay. Alternative efforts have not been entertained. Where is any foresight moving forward? Man-made wildlife population issues at Oglebay are ...

Time To Get a Bigger Shovel

Editor, News-Register: I disagree with comments made by West Virginia State Treasurer Riley Moore and GOP chairwoman Elgine McArdle at a so-called victory in unity reception. Mr. Moore wants to eliminate the U.S. Department of Education, while Chairwoman McArdle states that the city of Wheeling needs a major overhaul, and needs to be uprooted. Whatever that means. Mr. Moore wants to eliminate our public school system. This of course goes against the West Virginia Constitution. As an elected official, Mr. Moore is tasked with improving West Virginia. That includes our public ...

Hunt Best Way to Manage Herd

Editor, News-Register: We all know the proliferation of deer in our area has been an ongoing concern. These animals, while beautiful, have changed the way we plant our gardens and drive our roads. One can only imagine the challenges of Oglebay Park. For years, the deer herd has multiplied. Now the park administration has faced the task of getting the land and deer population in sync with the recent decision to cull the numbers, work with professionals to study the problem and oversee the process. This can only be for the good, for both the land and the animals. The deer eat all the ...

Find Option Other Than a Hunt

Editor, News-Register: I feel it necessary to share my thoughts about the upcoming deer culling. Oglebay Resort is planning on conducting a deer culling for three days in early November. For those of you unfamiliar with the term culling, the dictionary defines culling as “ a mass slaughter of a specific targeted animal population”, in this case, deer. I do agree that the deer population at Oglebay has proliferated and needs to be reduced. I have lived in the Bello Vedere section of Ohio County for 25 years and my property is adjacent to the Palmer Golf Course, so I see on a ...

Getting No Help at W.Va. DMV

Editor, News-Register: I can’t begin the describe my frustration at the Moundsville DMV. I went in with my Colorado driver’s license and my car to change my residence with the DMV. I drove 10+ miles, returned home, went back to the DMV and had to return home, empty handed. I am 77 years old and a 56-year spouse of a Navy veteran. I presented in all: My Colorado driver’s license, my car insurance, my residential rental agreement, my husband’s death certificate, my husband’s will, which leaves me as sole owner of our estate, my birth certificate, my title for my car and my ...

Fix Safety Concern Near Park

Editor, News-Register: I can’t imagine I am the only one who feels the need for a guardrail along the lower portion of Sonneborn Road and beside the Wheeling Park swimming pool area. Most of the trees that offered any protection at all from wayward vehicles have been cut down due to age, or the storm that blew through last summer took down the rest — thus, leaving a big open space that should be looked at diligently. I’ve called the park, city and state a few times. Does anyone know who would look at this new need in any promising manner? Thank you to any momentum that we ...
