Thankful for Aid and Assistance

Editor, News-Register: We didn’t get a name.  But this heart-felt “thank you” goes out to the Wheeling-area nurse who was kind enough to stop and comfort my daughter after a wreck on 2-Mile Hill during Friday morning’s snowstorm.  Your compassion and empathy were certainly welcomed at an extremely traumatic time. God bless you and yours.  Joe Myers Glen Dale

Sign, Sign, Everywhere a Sign

Editor, News-Register: I live on Middle Grave Creek Road in Marshall County and I clean up trash along that road with my sister every Sunday. There were five political signs placed in a pull-off spot on the state right of way before the election. Today, we found said signs lying on the creek bank in the same location. I looked up the law regarding placement of political signs and discovered it is a $25 - $100 per day fine for placing them on the state right of way. I believe there is also a $500 fine for littering. These five candidates were John Gruzinskas, Barry Wendell, Lisa ...

Guardians Excel in 2022 Season

Editor, News-Register: As a longtime fan of the Cleveland Major League Baseball franchise, now known as the Guardians, but from 1915-2021 as the Cleveland Indians, I was quite pleased and encouraged by the team’s fine performance on the diamond during the most recent 2022 season. The Guardians, 29th out of 30 Major League teams in payroll, were picked preseason by most pundits to finish in either third or fourth place out of five teams in the American League Central Division following their 80-82 won-loss record the previous season and with 2022 considered to be a “rebuilding ...

Pelosi Has Served Nation Well

Editor, News-Register: Nancy Pelosi is the greatest Speaker of the United States House of Representatives America has ever had! Her greatest achievement in my mind is the enactment of the Affordable Care Act. Medicaid Expansion, just one feature of the ACA, has brought health care coverage to an additional 21 million poor people in the U.S. Without Nancy the ACA would never have passed. (The Democrats had just lost their 60 seat majority — but not before passing the ACA — and sending it to the House. So Nancy had the House pass the Senate version without amending it which would ...

Beware of Energy Vampires

Editor, News-Register: There are vampires in my house! I’ll bet there are some in yours, too. These vampires feed on your electricity, drive up your power bill and drain your wallet. That’s pretty scary! No tricks here, the West Virginia Public Service Commission wants to treat you to some ideas that will help you save money. Vampire energy, also known as ghost energy or phantom load, is consumed by electric appliances that draw power even when turned off. This power drain is pretty easy to eliminate once you find it. Turn off the lights tonight. You can tell ghost ...

Standing Against Amendment 2

Editor, News-Register: We wish to respond to your editorial of Oct 29 that advocates passage of Amendment 2. We applaud the “proviso” you entreat the Legislature: upon passage they “begin a broader discussion on creating a modern tax system … that gives more control to cities and counties on how to raise revenue instead of the current, one-size-fits-all approach coming from Charleston.” Bravo. The West Virginia Association of Counties welcomes that discussion if Amendment 2 fails. That is a major reason why we voted to oppose Amendment 2 on Nov. 8. These discussions ...
