The Names of Sports Teams and More

Editor, News-Register: President Donald J. Trump’s recently announced order to have names of professional sports teams that were changed during the Biden administration, as a result that such team names were considered by many to have been racially or ethnically insensitive and disrespectful to many, is ridiculous. Among those teams with name changes are the former Cleveland Indians of Major League Baseball to the Cleveland Guardians and the former Washington Redskins of the National Football League to the Washington Commanders. Historically and for the record, the Cleveland ...

The State of America in the Year 2025

Editor, News-Register: Everything is going to hell in a handbasket, a doctor my wife used to work for frequently observed. Well that’s an apt observation for Trump’s second administration. CONSIDER INFLATION: The price for everything is way up from when Biden handed over the reins to Trump. Food prices are up over 15%, beer is up 20%. The price for school clothes is out of sight. Forget about buying a new car or even fixing the old car — you can’t afford it. CONSIDER TARIFFS: Tariffs are fuel for Inflation. Why in the world are we beating down a great ally like ...

Guard Troops Not Right for Crime Duty

Editor, News-Register: Once Republican West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey and Ohio Republican Gov. Mike DeWine sent our states’ National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., as part of President Donald Trump’s crime crackdown in the nation’s capital, I felt it was my duty to speak out. President Trump has long associated urban crime with the distressed street corners home to low-income American inner-city youth. Dating back to the time he was a private businessman in New York City. The debate is now raging about whether someone has juiced the statistics on D.C., with both sides ...

Cautionary Tale for Wheeling Residents

Editor, News-Register: I would like to respond to the Aug. 3 editorial “Creating Fair and Level Playing Field” concerning the proposed carwash on Mt. DeChantal Road. The author states that all requirements had preliminarily been met and it should be approved by the Planning Commission. The process took several weeks to gain clarity as the WashRite owners did not want to reveal their traffic numbers which are potentially 75-100 cars an hour. The traffic study resulted and passage occurred. This process was ridiculed by the editor and the single dissenting voter was trotted out ...

Editorial Unfairly Targeted Lawmakers

Editor, News-Register: While I appreciate the sentiments of The Intelligencer’s editorial board in its Aug. 16 editorial entitled “It’s Time for West Virginia To Get Into the Game,” as both a member of the House of Delegates and a physician, I’d like to respond to several of the points made in that article. Referring to the entire Legislature as the reason the ball was dropped in advancing meaningful legislation focusing on economic development and improving our education system is a bad call. In Charleston, getting the ball across the goal line requires both sides of the ...

Tell the Truth and Let the Readers Decide

Editor, News-Register: I remember the days from 2016 when your newspaper headlined the Russia collusion hoax against Donald J. Trump almost daily. The Mueller investigation turned over every rock to find something wrong that Trump could be charged with. It all started with a false document paid for by Hillary Clinton. It’s up to you if you want to propagate and advance false political narratives but if you want to be seen as a just and  fair news source, then you should at least report on the recent investigations opened by the DOJ and FBI  concerning the validity of those ...
