Four Marshall County Schools have either begun their flower sale or will be on Saturday or Monday.

Schools that have grown flowers to sell are Cameron High, John Marshall High, Moundsville Middle and Sherrard Middle Schools.

Items for sale will be hanging baskets, vegetable plants, herbs and a variety of flowers. The sales will take place in their school’s greenhouse.

In late January students began germinating seeds for tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, lettuce, cabbage and herbs. Then at the end of February plugs were purchased and transplanted for various types of other flowers.

Moundsville Middle School Agriculture Education students began selling their inventory this past Monday.

Their greenhouse is open every school day from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Beginning Saturday, the Cameron High School greenhouse will be open for business. Students in the Greenhouse Management class and Horticulture class will sell their assortment of plants every weekday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., and each Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon.

The John Marshall High School Greenhouse’s grand opening takes place from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday. Thereafter business hours will be Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Sherrard Middle School’s Greenhouse will open this Monday. The greenhouse will be open every school day from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Friday was the kickoff of the Marshall County FRN’s sixth annual “Hunger Doesn’t Take a Summer Vacation,” a Community-Wide Virtual Food collection that benefits local food assistance organizations and programs.

FRN personnel are hoping that individuals making contributions, food or monetary, will do so by mid-May.

Donations can be sent to the Marshall County FRN , WV 1501 Second St., Moundsville WV 26041, or their website which is marshallcountyfrn.com

Through the challenges of the past year, Marshall County food pantries, soup kitchens, and other food assistance programs have witnessed a prolonged increase in individuals and families accessing food due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, these organizations are also experiencing a lack of donations, placing a further strain on their vital services.

The Marshall County Spring Clean-Up is again underway.

Saturday, dumpsters will be at Sherrard Middle School and the Limestone VFD Headquarters. The hours of both are 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.

All Marshall County residents are welcome to use any of these dumpsters, or any dumpsters that the Marshall County Solid Waste Authority and Marshall County Commission places the rest of this month and the month of June.

There are some restrictions at the dumpster sites which are as follows:

No tires, white goods, scrap metals, car parts, fuels, hazardous chemicals/maters or household trash.

As to the next weekend, there will be dumpsters on Saturday at the Dallas VFD Headquarters and at the St. Joe’s Fire House.

As a reminder, the Marshall County E-Recycle will take place from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m., on May 15 in the north parking lot at John Marshall High School. It being the only such Spring effort.

Among the E-Recycle drop offs will be car and light truck tires (17 inch and smaller), white goods, electronics, computers, air conditioners, humidifiers and dehumidifiers.

Anyone wishing any more information pertaining to the dumpsters of the E-Recycle can contact the MCSWA at 304-780-9866 or via email at HowardCof@comcast.net

Speaking of clean-up, the Moundsville Lions Club last Saturday sold 20 brooms at the UMAC Small Business Saturday.

Not only will the brooms be used to help in clean-up, but the sales of the brooms will assist the Lions Club in providing eye examinations and the purchase of eye glasses.

The Moundsville Economic Development Council office will be closed through Wednesday as the facility will be utilized during this period by the annual Mock Prison Riot. Of course, tours of the former penitentiary will not be available as well, however, the tours will resume on Thursday.

Speaking of tours, MEDC director Tom Stiles informed members of the board that tours of the facility during the month of April had been very good.

These included daily tours, and night tours, the latter being Fridays through Sundays.
