Marshall Memo: Varner Honored in Philadelphia; New Business; and Flags

Moundsville native Shayna Varner and 39 other women received awards earlier this year at a City & State’s Above & Beyond Gala held in nearby Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

This was the first-ever event of influential and thought-provoking women in Pennsylvania who have demonstrated leadership in their field, combined with having made significant contributions to society.

Honorees received an engraved award at the ceremony. Varner is vice president for Strategy for the Pennsylvania Health Care Association, headquartered in Harrisburg. She became a member of this association in 2019.

The application for the honor states that Varner brought “fresh communications strategies to advocate for Pennsylvania’s most vulnerable in the effort to fight for regulatory waivers, new funding mechanisms resources to assist 70 percent of nursing home residents who rely on a historically underfunded state Medicare program.”

Varner noted it is important to bring together the entire health care and continuum.

Varner, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Scott Varner, graduated from John Marshall in 2006 and then worked in the office of Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin.

She received her bachelor’s degree at Harding University and master’s from West Virginia University.

A new Moundsville business opened its doors this weekend.

The Farmhouse Pedddler Floral & Home Decor is located at 1401 First St. The owners are Greg and Paula Galentine.

This marks Galentine’s second business in Marshall County, as he has operated a flower business for the past 17 years in Cameron.

He said he has been looking for space in Moundsville for the past six months.

He noted that the new location had a For Sale sign on the front window of the building, and contacted owner Mark Walker who agreed to lease the building.

Galentine, his wife and others have been working for the past month preparing the building’s interior.

The building was first utilized as a grocery store, and after that it was known as Toy Town and later #1 Sport Fan.

Galentine, who is the mayor of Cameron, said he was interested in the florist business as a youngster, and when he was a freshman at Cameron High School, he helped take care of watering the flowers at the Cameron Neubauer’s Florist. He would later work for Wheeling Florist. Overall, he has been in the floral business for 33 years.

He said that he will continue operation at the Cameron location, with his wife and others to handle that business.

He stated that both businesses will be open six days a week.

A Marshall County church will be sending $3,000 of its mission funds to the Ukraine relief effort.

The Wolf Run Presbyterian Church, whose postal address is in Cameron, will have its donations matched by the church’s Synod, thus doubling the money.

The Synod of the Trinity Presbyterian Church established a Stand With Ukraine initiative.

Originally this was a $10,000 matching grant, but due to the overwhelming response, that figure was increased to $50,000.

Wolf Run Church’s donation will be made in memory of Bill Zien, who was a member of the Ukranian Church in South Wheeling.

Bill and his wife, Phyllis, lived on Irish Ridge and were a part of the Wolf Run family. Anyone wishing to contribute to Wolf Run’s Ukraine Relief Effort may mail a check to 502 Dunn’s Drive, Cameron WV 26003, made payable to the Wolf Run Presbyterian Church.

Checks may be mailed directly to Synod of the Trinity, 702 East Simpson Street, Unit 87, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.

Please write Ukraine on the memo line of any checks provided. (Donations may also be made online on the SynTrinity.org website, on their Stand With Ukraine page.).

All administrative fees will be covered by the Synod so your entire donation will be sent to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance for Ukraine.

Veterans Park in Cameron will take on a different look from May 25 through June 1. It is referred to as “Field of Flags.”

Members of Cameron American Legion Post No. 18 are in charge of this endeavor for the sixth year which has continued to increase every year for the past five years.

The first year 363 flags were purchased by local residents and others who wanted to honor a veteran, past or present, with a flag on Memorial Day Weekend.

This past year the number of flags was 1,133.

The response this year for the flag purchases has been excellent from the more than 300 letters sent to previous participants. These letters listed the number of flags they had previously adopted while giving opportunity to add additional flag orders.

Flag order forms are available with purchases in person at seven Cameron businesses–Truist Bank, Bridge Street Restaurant, Cameron Floral, American Legion Post No. 18, Dragon Mart, Cameron Post Office, and Greg’s Market.

For those wishing to make their purchases via mail they can send their orders to Cameron American Legion Post No. 18, P.O. Box 235, Cameron WV 26033.

They will need to include the Veterans name, his or her branch of service, and whether the purchase is new or a renewal.

The purchaser needs to list their name, address and telephone, along with a check payable to American Legion Post No. 18. The cost being $5 per flag.

All flags will be be completed with laser printed waterproof labels.
