Marshall Memo: ‘Wild and Wonderful for a Cure’; Strings; and Sanford School

“Wild and Wonderful for a Cure” is the theme for this year’s Marshall County Relay for Life event which will take June 17 John Marshall High School.

Auditions for the Addams Family Musical will take place at 6 p.m. on both May 30 and May 31 at The Strand Theatre. Those planning to audition are asked to prepare 16-32 bars of a song from either a musical or an upbeat pop song.

Audition ages are high school through adults.

The Addams Family performance will run July 29 and July 30 at 7 p.m., and July 31 at 2 p.m.

Shelby Garrett will direct the show, Justin Jones will serve as music director, Anna Harsh will be choreographer, and Meta Lasch will serve as technical director.

Another June event at The Strand will be that of the Missoula Children’s Theatre from June 20-25.

It is a free children’s acting workshop for those in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Interested students are to pre-register online and report to The Strand on June 20.

Registrations will be from May 2 through June 13 at www.strandtheatrewv.com/events.

The Strand Theatre will hold a final class geared toward seniors. The class is titled, “Rhythm in Music” and will be held from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on May 3, 10, and 17.

Jason Birch, Sherrard Middle School Band Director, will lead the class in understanding the significance of rhythm in music.

And yet another Strand Theatre undertaking will be that of an indoor yard sale to be held today/Saturday at the theatre.

From 8 a.m. until noon items will be sold as marked. The sale will be closed from noon until 1 p.m., and will be reopened from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m., for a clearance sale.

The first countywide strings program since 2019 will take place at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the John Marshall High School Center for the Performing Arts when the annual spring concert takes the stage. The concert will feature combined performances by students in grades 4-12 which involve students from Cameron, Center McMechen, Central, Glen Dale, Hilltop, Sand Hill and Washington Lands elementary, as well as Cameron, Moundsville and Sherrard middle school, and Cameron and John Marshall High Schools.

The concert is free; however donations will be accepted.

A special piece, commissioned by the John Marshall Band and Strings, in memory of Jim Gracey, will premiere. Opening Night, written by award-winning composer Brian Balmages, celebrates the life of Gracey who was killed in a car accident his freshman year.

Tuesday is the final day to purchase “Field of Flags” from the Cameron American Legion Post No. 18 and several businesses.

This will be the sixth year to honor Veterans on Memorial Day through flags.

The flags will be on display May 25 through June 1 at Veterans Park. The flags cost $5.

In addition to the Legion, other places at which flags can be obtained are: Truist Bank, Bridge Street Restaurant, Cameron Floral, Dragon Mart, Cameron Post Office and Greg’s Market. Also, orders can be mailed or delivered to the Legion Post No. 18 at P.O. Box 235, Cameron WV 26033.

If you are looking for something to do three weeks from today, you might want to consider the Moundsville Economic Development Council’s Marketplace, an event to take place from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. May 21 at the Moundsville Center at the former West Virginia Penitentiary. The attraction will consist of different types of sales and entertainment.

Those looking for items such as crafts, art, antiques, produce, flowers, specialty goods and anything else the sellers will might have available, so bring your money.

Those planning to be sellers or performers need to sign up, this can be done by phoning the MEDC office at 304-845-6200, although the office will be closed until Thursday of this week.

There will be a $1 per person admission, and those coming through the North Wagon Gate are to sign their name for giveaways.

There will be two locations today for dumpsters in conjunction with the Marshall County Spring Clean-Up sponsored by the Marshall County Solid Waste Authority and the Marshall County Commission.

The cleanup will be from 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Dallas VFD Headquarters and the St. Joseph’s Firehouse.

Also, the following week, May 13 and 14, there will be dumpsters at the Glen Dale City Garage, and at the entrance off of 13th Street at Valley Fork Park.

There will be no provisions at the four dumpster sites to accept tires, white goods, scrap metal, car parts, fuels, hazardous chemicals/materials or household trash.

The Marshall County Health Department will be closed on May 10, May 24 and May 30. There will be five different clinics during the month of May, along with three trainings, and one planning program.

If you have gone past the old Sanford School in Moundsville you will notice that the building is no longer there. City officials have yet to decide what will be done with the property.

American Legion Post No. 3 members in Moundsville will elect officers for the 2022-2023 fiscal year from 9 a.m. until the meeting time at 8 p.m. on Monday.
