Glen Dale Elementary School will observe Veterans Day with a program at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Glen Dale City Park.
Special guests will include the Moundsville Honor Guard and GDES alumnus Kaden Minch. The program will conclude with a patriotic sing-along and parade of flags.
Minch is an Eagle Scout with Troop 82 of Glen Dale. He is a junior at John Marshall High School, where he is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Technical Honor Society. He also plays the trumpet in the band.
He chose to honor veterans when choosing his Eagle Scout project.
"I chose to re-create the old memorial site at the Glen Dale City Park,” Minch explained. "To complete the project, I added poles and flags representing each branch of the military which are Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard. In addition, we have a pole for our US and POW flags. To add to the flag poles, we completed landscaping so we could have a place for our citizens to enjoy and our military members could feel honored.''
Glen Dale Elementary music teacher Kathy Fox said she is proud to feature Kaden and hopes that his message inspires the students to get involved and to share their time and talents with their communities.
She added, "We decided to hold our program at the park after one student, Levi Edman, commented on how much he loves to see the memorial site while at the park. I wanted to be sure that our students were aware of Kaden's efforts and I am thrilled that Kaden is willing to share his story with us.”
In case of rain, the program will be held at the school.

During the month of November the officers of the Moundsville Police Department will not be shaving!
Police Chief Tom Mitchell says it is being done to bring awareness and raise funds for the "Student Support Fund'' at Central Elementary School in Moundsville. Police officers will be accepting donations for their beard growth.
School counselor Jenna Dompa said the money collected will be put toward purchasing school supplies, hygiene items, backpacks, clothing, food, or anything a student might need.
Since the program is based solely on fundraising, each officer is asked to secure $50 or more in contributions for this cause.
Donations can be dropped off at the Moundsville Police Department headquarters or be sent by mail to 608 Tomlinson Ave., Moundsville. Checks can also be dropped off at the school.
This is the fifth year for this fund.

The Strand Theatre in Moundsville has announced six events for the month of December.
Those include an acting class, the Ron Retzer Trio, Nutcracker Ballet, Christmas Cabaret, Christmas craft and movie and a musical titled, "Spirit of the Holidays.”
The Strand's Children's Acting Class will showcase at 10 a.m. on Dec. 3 when students will demonstrate various theatrical skills and scenes they learned and developed during the fall semester classes. Admission is $5 for age 6 and up, while those age 5 and under will be free.
"Christmas at the Strand” will be a holiday musical by the Ron Retzer Trio, consisting of Retzer, Jennifer Galownia and Bob Wolfe. It will be at 7 p.m. on Dec. 9. Doors will open at 6 p.m.
The Nutcracker Ballet will take place at 2 p.m. on Dec. 10. Those in attendance will see Dancing flower, Flurries of snowflakes, Beautiful fairies and legion of mice sweep and soar across Strand Theatre's stage as Oglebay Institute's Youth Ballet Company dances the holiday favorite "The Nutcracker.''
The Christmas Cabaret will take to the stage at 7 p.m. on Dec. 16. Some of the Strand Theatre's performers will be joining together for an evening of holiday music and cheer. The singers will be accompanied by Justin Jones, with Sadie Crow as emcee.
The children's Christmas craft/movie event will be free, and will be held at 2 p.m. on Dec. 17. It will be sponsored by Gold, Khourey & Turak.
Landau Eugene Murphy Jr., will take the stage at 7 p.m. Dec. 20. Murphy rose to national attention on NBC's "American Got Talent'' show. Patrons can purchase a second ticket which will enable them to receive a copy of his "Christmas Made for Two'' album and participate in a pre-show meet-and-greet with the artist.

Blake Brothers American Legion in Benwood will be holding its annual Veterans Day dinner/program this coming Saturday at the Post Home.
There will be a social at 6:15 pm., with the program to begin at 7 p.m. The guest speaker will be Zach Allman, along with the Post Everlasting.

The Marshall County Sheriff's Department will have a new deputy starting on Nov. 7 – county native Joseph Maupin, who was approved at this past Tuesday's at the Marshall County Commission meeting.
Also, at the meeting the commissioners approved one non-profit business and 15 small businesses awards for monies received by the commission from the American Rescue Plan Act. To date the commissioners have approved money in the amount of $816,314. The commissioners have five more small businesses to review.
Also this week, the commissioners viewed the testing of the voting machines which will be used in Tuesday's election.

Visitors of the Crafts at the Discovery Table at the Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex in Moundsville this month will deal with seasonal trees.
They will complete a tree picture using leaves made of pumpkin and squash seeds.
The Discovery Table is free to families during regular museum hours.
On Nov. 12 at the museum, from 12:30 p.m. until 4 p.m., visitors will be making holiday greeting cards with assistance of Artist Cheryl Childers and museum staff members. They will use foam prints based on cookie cutter shapes.

The Marshall County Chamber of Commerce's annual Tree Gala Auction and Reception will take place Wednesday evening at the Training Center at the former West Virginia Penitentiary.
The event will be catered by WVU Medicine Reynolds Memorial Hospital with music by the John Marshall Strings.
This year a portion of proceeds will go to the "JM Paws for a Cause Club.” The event will be sponsored by WesBanco and WVU Medicine Reynolds Memorial Hospital.

Another Wednesday evening event will be a storytelling performance at the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library, to start at 6 p.m.
Karen Vuranch will be the storyteller with her performance as "Cass Elliot.”
The program is free and open to the public and aimed at adults and teens.
Elliot was one of the singers in the iconic 1960s band, "The Mamas and the Papas.”
Cass Elliot is the newest character performed by Vuranch.
Vuranch will tell the story of the life of this feisty woman. The performance will consist of three parts.
The audience will hear the life story of Elliott, including her work with the “Mamas and Papas'' and her role in defining the “hippie'' movement. The audience will have the opportunity to ask questions of characters, as if it were 1974. Vuranch will also break character and answer questions.
