Marshall Memo: Business and Health Expo; Painting Pooches and Punch; and Scholarships
The annual Marshall County Chamber of Commerce Business & Health Expo is Friday and Saturday at the Moundsville Center.
The hours are 4-8 p.m. on Friday, and from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Chamber officials expect more than the 2,000 persons that attended last year as several new attractions have signed on.
In addition to Health and Fitness booths, there will other attractions such as those dealing in Home Improvements, Industry, HealthCare, Lawn & Garden, Banking/Financial, Real Estate/Finance, Health Screenings, Recreations, etc. There also will be appearances by Mary the Mountaineer and WVU great Avon Cobourne.

The Cockayne Farmstead Committee will be hold its monthly meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Farmstead in Glen Dale.
Anyone wishing to assist with the planning for the WWII event is welcome to attend. The event will be held Sept. 9-10 at the Farmstead.

Anyone interested in purchasing a copy of Thomas P. Krupica’s new book should notify the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library within the next few weeks so they can make sure enough copies will be available for his April 3rd book signing.
Krupica is familiar to many as a retired educator with 33 years experience in the Marshall County Schools.
His deep interest and extensive research on the Titanic has led to his authoring of a book, “Titanic Lifeboat #6: Was It Deception or Regulations?” Krupica focuses on this specific aspect of the ship’s sinking.
Krupica’s illustrated work also reveals some West Virginia connections in the history of the famous ship.

There will be a Paint Your Pet! Event from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on March 19 in Richmond Hall at Grand Vue Park.
The public is invited to create a custom portrait of their pet called, “Painted by You!”
Artists will be on hand to guide participants step-by-step through the process.
A photo of the pet to be painted will need to be submitted by March 8 to triggle@grandvuepark.com so the artists can prepare each canvas.
Limited spots are available. Call the Park’s Main Office at 304-845-9810, extension 403, or visit grandvuepark.com. The cost for this event is $75 per portrait.

There will also be a “Paint & Punch” on March 18 at Grand Vue Park.
This will be a kid-friendly painting event with instructor Deborah Smith.
Those signing up will be provided will all materials for the painting, plus snacks and fruit punch.
Ages 6 and up are welcome with an adult present.
The cost will be $25 per painting. The event will begin at 1 p.m., at the Chevron Learning Center across from the pool. To register, call the Main Office. Pre-registration is required.

The opening reception of the Marshall County Student Art Show will be from 2-4 p.m. on March 25 at the Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex.
The show will be open for Museum visitors from March 25 to April 15.
The art show will once again be organized by students of Cameron High School under the supervision of CHS teacher Amanda Jenree.

Today is Fossil Day from noon until 4 p.m. at the Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex. Geologist Elizabeth Rhenberg, from the West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey, will identify fossils brought in by individuals. Also, the West Virginia Fossil Club will showcase fossils.
There will be a lecture at 2 p.m., titled, “The Wild, Wonderful Sloth of West Virginia,” by Dr. Ryan Haupt.

Applications are now available for the John Marshall Trust Fund Scholarships.
The fund was created by the John Marshall High School Faculty Senate in 1991.
The fund began with contributions from the John Marshall Faculty as a part of their Friday, “Jeans Day.”
Students can apply for many of these scholarships by filling out only one application that is available in the counseling office or can be downloaded from the John Marshall website.
Applications are due to the John Marshall Counseling office by March 31 at 9 a.m.

Lauren Riggenbach was named the 2023 John Marshall High School Queen of Queens during the annual pageant.
Ten senior girls competed for the school’s crown on the stage of the John Marshall Center for Performing Arts.
Khloe Trussell earned first runner-up, while Madelyn Cisar was selected second runner-up. Emma Felton was voted Miss Congeniality by all of the contestants.
