Talented Moundsville; a Musical March; ‘In the Round;’ and History Heroes

Plans for this year’s Moundsville’s Got Talent competition are underway. Six different acts will perform for a panel of three judges during a live performance beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Strand Theatre.

Following the first-round performance, judges will determine the top three who will perform in a second round.

First place will receive $300, given by the city of Moundsville’s Arts Culture Commission, the second-place winner will receive $200 from The Green Tab, while the third-place winner will receive $100 from the JMHS 69-79 Alumni Association.

The contestants are Jacob Boyette, Kenzie Church, Annadra Dudley, Robert Kies, Sarah McBee, Seth Will and Abby Young.

Monetary donations by those in attendance to vote for the people’s choice award.

Strand Theatre officials also invite the public to join them for a unique concert titled “In the Round.”

For this March 21 performance concert-goers will be seated facing the house while enjoying appetizers and beverages along with entertainment by Joshua Garrett.

Garrett is director of bands at Sherrard Middle School and percussion instructor at John Marshall High School.

The Marshall County Association of Retired School Employees will meet at noon Thursday at the Ash Avenue Church of God.

Individual snacks will be collected to benefit the Marshall County Family Resource Network.

There will be a free encore showing of the film, “Elvis,” at 6 p.m. Monday at the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library.

The showing will take place in the downstairs meeting room.

The film is rated PG-13 and runs for 159 minutes. It stars Austin Butler and Tom Hanks.

Four Marshall County residents were honored at the recent West Virginia History Heroes event. Three of the individuals, Jill Dolen, Evan Lightner and Brian Richmond, were nominated by the Marshall County Historical Society, while Dixie Selmon was nominated by the Cockayne Farmstead.

Volunteers Dolen, Lightner and Richmond spearheaded a total cleaning and painting of the interior and exterior of the Marshall County History Museum. They also acquired display cases and reorganized and labeled artifacts.

Selmom has been a volunteer at the Cockayne Farmstead since 2019, bringing energy to every project she has undertaken.

She assists with upkeep of the house and grounds and has helped identify, sort, catalog, and photograph hundreds of artifacts found in a shed behind the farmhouse.

During March, music education in the school communities is celebrated by “Music In Our Schools Month.” The theme for the month being, “Music Is All of Us.”

March Marks the 38th Music in Our Schools.

To recognize the celebratory month, Marshall County Schools Superintendent Shelby Haines has also signed a resolution on behalf of the county school system.

“The music programs offered through Marshall County Schools impacts the lives of all students,” Haines said. “We are blessed to have such talented music educators who share their passion with students daily.”

Music educators from Marshall County this past week were in Charleston participating in the annual West Virginia Music Educators Association In-Service Conference.
