Marshall Memo: Hunt for Some Mountain State Treasures on West Virginia Day
Six Marshall County sites will take part in West Virginia Day on Tuesday in Moundsville and Glen Dale with a scavenger hunt, organized by the Grave Creek Mound and the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library.
A scavenger hunt guide can be picked up at the Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex at 801 Jefferson Ave. in Moundsville. Those taking part in the “Hunt” are to bring their completed guide to the library, 700 Fifth St., Moundsville, to claim a prize! Prizes must be claimed by 6:30 p.m.
In addition to the Mound and the library, other participants will be:
– Cockayne Farmstead, 1105 Wheeling Ave., Glen Dale, where there will be free tours, historic craft demos, and more. The farmstead will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
– The Fostoria Glass Museum, 511 Tomlinson Ave., Moundsville, will be open 1-4 p.m. There will a fee to attend the museum. The museum is not usually open on Tuesdays, but because of the scavenger hunt will be open on this day.
– Former West Virginia Penitentiary, 818 Jefferson Ave., Moundsville. Hourly tours are from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., and those planning to tour the facility are asked to arrive 10 minutes early. There is a fee.
– Marshall County Historical Society, 13th Street and Lockwood Ave., Moundsville. Museum exhibits will be open for viewing on West Virginia Day from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. There is no charge to view the exhibits.
Getting back to the Grave Creek Mound and the Moundsville-Marshall County Library, hours at the mound will be from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. There is no charge to view either the indoor or outdoor facilities, although those wishing to walk to the top of the mound on Tuesday must do so by 4 p.m., as outdoor access closes at 4:30 p.m. There will be craft activities displayed on Tuesday along with a film.
There is also no fee for visits to the library, where those attending can visit the building’s History Room and other locations within the facility.

Officers of Moundsville American Legion Post No. 3 were recently elected with Tom Hicks to assume the office of commander July 1. He will be stepping down June 30 as state commander.
Other officers for the upcoming year are: George Carter, 1st vice commander; Don Gill, 2nd vice commander; Mike Kuzma, adjutant and finance officer; Chuck Lewey, service officer; Elsworth Scherich, historian; Don Chamberlain, chaplain; Larry Cool, sergeaant-at-arms.
Executive Board members elected were Cool, Steve Drake, Dave Eddy, Ed Gary, Roy Jenkins and Nicole Stocklask.
For the 2022-23 fiscal year Post No. 3 has invested in several building upgrades. These include a handicap chair to the upstairs from the front entrance, new LED lighting, plumbing, new carpeting on the front porch and entryways, along with other upgrades and building repairs.
Post No. 3 has also donated to many local charitable organizations, veteran organizations and local youth organizations.

The John Marshall High School Class of 1978 will hold its 45th reunion on July 22 at St. Jude Hall in Glen Dale.

The Marshall County Board of Education approved a number of employment/transfers recommended by Superintendent Shelby Haines at Tuesday’s meeting, including two new assistant principals — Jason D. Willis from teacher of physical education/health to assistant principal at Moundsville Middle School and Kallie J. Kastrevee from teacher of social studies at John Marshall High School to assistant principal at JMHS.
New teachers are Sherry Wood-Gouge, teacher of preschool special needs at McNinch Primary, and Ayla N. Geer, third grade teacher at Center McMechen Elementary.
Transfer teachers are Tena M. Stricklin from teacher of gifted, Central Elementary/Washington Lands Elementary to teacher of multi-cat w/autism at Sand Hill Elementary; Cathy L. Reuter from teacher of math at John Marshall to teacher of math at Cameron High; and Heather J. Stillion from fifth grade, Central Elementary, to Title I teacher at the same school.

The Cockayne Sisters Garden Tea will be held at 2 p.m., on June 25 at the Family Farmstead. The cost will be $20 for adults and $10 for those under the age of 16.

The annual Marshall County Spring Clean-Up will take place on June 24 at the Cameron Elementary School, and in the downtown area of Glen Easton.
It will be the final clean-up effort which began in April.
The hours will be from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.
All Marshall County residents are welcome to use either of the sites.
There will be no provisions at either location to accept Tires, White Goods, Scrap Metal, Car Parts, Fuels, Hazardous Chemicals/Materials, or Household Trash.
