Marshall Memo: Everyone Loves a Parade; Recycling; and Fall Festival

The 53rd annual Marshall County Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade is right around the corner on Saturday, Nov. 18. That means it is time for the yearly Marshall County student Christmas Parade naming contest. This year’s entries are to be submitted by September 25th to chamber@marshallcountychamber.com. Students can enter individually or as a class. Last year a student from Hilltop Elementary was the winner. The winner this year will receive $100, and can be in the parade.

The Marshall County Fall Clean-up will take place in mid-October. Dumpster will be at the following locations from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. All Marshall County residents are welcome to use any of the sites.

– McMechen — old football field.

– Glen Dale — City Garage,

– Moundsville — Sam Shaw Walking trail

– Cameron — Elementary School

– Roberts Ridge — VFD Headquarters

– Sherrard Middle School — Hilltop Elementary

– Limestone — U.S. 250 VFD Headquarters.

E-Recycling will be held from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Sept. 30 at the North parking lot at John Marshall High School. Items accepted are car and light truck tires (17 inch and smaller), white goods, electronics, computers, air conditioners, humidifiers, and dehumidifiers. No televisions will be accepted.

The last of the three structures at Sand Hill Elementary School was recently removed. A new school building will replace the old buildings. The new school building is expected to be completed in 18 months.

A few members of the Moundsville Lions Club tackled some shrubs and weeds recently at the East End Playground Complex behind the Bronco Fields. Overall four loads of debris were removed and cleaned up at the park. Members taking part were Doug Pettit, Gene Saunders, Dave Ealy, Nick Zervos, Gene Lough, David Knuth, Tim Wilt, and Scott Reager.

The Grand Vue Park’s annual Fall Festival will take place on Sept. 30 at the park. People may sign up as either a craft or food vendor. To reserve a spot at the event, stop by the Center or call the main office at 304-845-9810, extension 403, or go online to grandvuepark.com

At the Tuesday meeting of Moundsville City Council, City Manager Rick Heal, reported on the progress of the New Municipal Building. According to Healy, above ground plumbing is ongoing as is work on the security area and tower. On the second and third floors, floor decking is now complete as is block work on the elevator shaft and north wall area. Interior walls and ductwork hangers are currently being installed and the raised area at the rear of the building has been poured.

Healy also reported on the successful Community Day held Aug. 19. Jefferson Avenue is getting a bit of a makeover with new lights and globes installed. Pressure washing will be done as a comparison between outside companies and in-house labor is being compared.

The Community Development Block Grant Demo Grant in the amount of $112,000 to raze seven hours has two days left for public comment. The next step will be a 15-day comment period by the state and then the project can go out to bid. One of the first steps is having asbestos testing by and environmental firm completed on all of the houses.
