Marshall Memo: Pumpkin Drop; Fostoria Glass; and a Look 89 Years Back

Authors Gary Rider and Roseanna Dakan Keller have announced the release of their new book, “Memories of Fostoria Glass.” The authors will be at the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library on Thursday, Nov. 9 from 3-5:30 p.m. to sign copies.

“Memories of Fostoria” is the biggest volume produced by the authors to date as the book contains 373 pages of information from the company coming to Moundsville until Lancaster Colony closed the plant. The book contains more than 200 picture of the workers, leaders, the facility and the Fostoria Glass Museum, which preserves the history of the company today.

The annual Marshall County Chamber of Commerce Tree Gala auction will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Moundsville Center within the walls of the former Prison. Items will include trees, wreaths, and mantel decorations. Many of those that will have items in the auction began work this past Thursday and will complete their work by 1 p.m. Saturday. In addition to the tree gala, other events will be a toy drive, and of course a Christmas Parade, which will take place at 2 p.m. on Nov. 18.

If you wish to see the Tree Gala in advance, you can do so between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Monday at the Moundville Center.

The Cameron Blue and Gold Christian Center will host a free Thanksgiving dinner at noon Nov. 18 at the Community Center. Dine-in, carry-out, and deliveries will be available. Dinner will include turkey, mashed potatoes, noodles, green beans, rolls, desserts, and a drink. Donations of desserts and volunteers to help would be appreciated. The Cameron Library continues to have pre-school story time every other Monday at 1 p.m. Cameron’s Department of Health and Human Services has a representative at the library once or twice a month. The dates for the rest of the year are Nov. 8 and Dec 13. Call the Library in Moundville to make an appointment at 304-843-4126.

Cameron’s Dollar General Store and the Blue and Gold Christian Center are working together to provide new toys for children in need. If you would like to participate, toys may be dropped off at the Dollar General Store or the Center. The toys will be taken to Cameron High School where they will be included with gifts for children participating in the Caring Tree. For more information call 304- 686-2432.

Three Marshall County School students were winners in the statewide “Kids Kick Opioids” PSA contest. The winning student are: Cameron Middle and High School students, Cali Lucey and Dawson Hill, and Moundsville Middle School student Ella Whiddon. Their designs are on display at the West Virginia State Capitol through Nov. 12.

There is an individual who will have a birthday this coming Thursday and he has “news of the past,” which includes data from 89 years ago. A gallon of milk in 1934 was 45 cents. A loaf of bread was 8 cents. A new vehicle was $575 while leaded gas for your vehicle was 11 cents per gallon. A new home cost an average of $5,972 and the average annual income was $1,518. In 1934, the St, Louis Cardinals won the World Series in game 7 against Detroit.

A pumpkin drop was held recently at Washington Lands Elementary School. Six of the 13 pumpkins came out unscathed. Winning entries included those from Deanne Clutter’s Kindergarten class, Julie Mager’s kindergarten class, Shannon Young’s first grade class, Melissa Love’s third grade class, Connie Green’s fourth grade class, and Charlotte Steed’s fifth graders.

The surviving pumpkins were repurposed as jack-o-lanterns.
