Marshall Memo: Recognizing Veterans; Pizza Party Day; and Plantings

Eleven Moundsville city employees were honored at this past week’s council meeting following an announcement by city manager Rick Healy.

Healy said, “I remembered that May is National Military Appreciation Month and started thinking about members and veterans working for the city.

“A little background — In 1999, Congress designated May as National Military Appreciation Month to ensure the nation was given the chance to publicly show their appreciation for troops past and present. It serves as a reminder of the profound contribution made by service members.

“Each year, the president makes a proclamation in May reminding Americans of the important role the U.S. Armed Forces have played in the history and development of our country. May was chosen because it has many individual days marked to note our military’s achievements, including Loyalty Day, established in 1921, Victory in Europe (VE) Day commemorating the end of WWII in Europe in 1945, and Children of Fallen Patriots Day.”

Healy continued, “Tonight I would like to honor the service and sacrifice of members of the Army, Nancy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marines, Space Force and National Guard as well as the contributions of their spouses and families.” Those city employees are Danielle Harmon, George Carter, Brittany DaGrava, Autumn Wise, Mick Garcia, William Whitelatch, Doug Allman, Donnie Hall, Gary Whitlach, Tyler Truex and Willis Howard.

In late April and early May, several matters were attended to in Mouhdsville. They included:

Demolition continues on the CDBG Project. A large house at 1405 4th St. was started this past week, with 1717 1st St. next. This will complete the structures for this project. As of May 3, there have been 371 properties registered for the Rental Registration Program. This is 67% of the rental properties.

On May 6th OVTRA began a trial run of bus service in the city. This trial will last for six months.

Also, in April the city housed the OnTrac Experts Visit. It was a daylong event, which included a walking tour of the Historic Business District, a working lunch with the Council, and meetings with city staff, department heads, county and other officials, and business owners. The much-anticipated Ribbon Cutting for The Roller Derby will be held May 16 at 4 p.m.

The Marshall FRN in Moundsville encourages everyone to mark their calendars for May 17 as that date is National Pizza Party Day and Original PJ’s Pizza/Varsity Pizza is donating a portion of pizza sales on that day to Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center.

Washington Lands Elementary School held its 7th annual Make-A-Wish Foundation of America fundraiser. Students, faculty, and staff surpassed the school-wide goal of $1,200 by collecting $1,939.83. This year, as a reward for exceeding their goal, 16 members of the Washington Lands faculty and staff participated in the school’s inaugural Wildcats Inflatables Races.

Each staff member wore a different inflatable costume and raced each other around the school playground.

The top earning class, Charlotte Steed’s 5th graders, also earned an afternoon with an extra recess and a movie. Steed’s students brought in $641.95. Rounding out the top four donating classes are Sarah Phillips’ 3rd grade class collecting $491, Julie Sheedy’s kindergartners raising $287 and Deanne Clutter’s kindergarten class accumulating $260.

May is garden planting time at the Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex. A garden planting day will take place from noon until 3 p.m. next Saturday.
