Marshall Memo: A Busy Weekend; Some Personnel Matters; and New Officers

Several attractions will be taking place Saturday, June 29, in Marshall County. They include:

– Farmers Market at the Marshall County Fairgrounds from 8 a.m. to noon.

– Navajo Dineh Tah’ at the Grave Cheek Mound from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

– Historic Preservation: Meadowcroft and Historic Village at the Grave Creek Mound from 2-4 p.m.

– Bingo at Richmond Hall at Grand Vue Park starting at 6 p.m.

– Outdoor Summer Concert at the Hardy Media Stage at Grand Vue Park from 6:30 -8:30 p.m.

– Twilight Tour of the former West Virginia Penitentiary from 7-10 p.m.

– Public Ghost Hunt at the former penitentiary from 11 p.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Sunday.

Meanwhile, there will be a Sunday Brunch in the Rose Garden at the Palace of Gold from 10-11:30 a.m.

There will be a History Mystery on Monday at the Penitentiary from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Yoga at the Banquet Hall at Grand Vue Park is from 6-7 p.m. Monday.

The Marshall County Board of Education held a business meeting Tuesday.

Several events are planned at the Benwood-McMechen Public Library during the month of July. They are:

– Free Movies: “Shrek 2” on Wednesday, July 10, at 4 p.m. and “Sonic The Hedgehog 2” on Wednesday, July 24, at 4 p.m.

– The Summer Reading Program continues with those wishing to learn the days to contact the library at 304-232-9720 or see the library’s Facebook page.

– Free Cheese Club with Joshua Phillips is now on the first and third Thursday of the month from 3:30-5:30 p.m.

Please note, the library will be closed July 4 and July 5 for the holiday.

There will be programs on July 1, 2 and 3 at the Cameron Public Library including:

– Jason Courtwright will be having a program: “Adventures at the Beach” on July 1.

– Lorena Lahew’s program is titled “The Bernstein Bears Castle Adventures” on July 2.

– On July 3, Amy Hayes will host a program “Summer Camping Fun.”

At the recent meeting of the Moundsville Lions Club the new officers were installed. They are:

Shelby Haines, president; Kurt Weinschenker, 1st vice president; Dianne Magers, 2nd vice president, assistant secretary, and 2nd year board of director; Trish Weinschenker, secretary and assistant treasurer; Eva Dague, treasurer and permanent board of directors; the Rev. Tim Wilt, tail twister; Dave Ealy, lion tamer; Dave Knuth, the Rev. John Ledford and Doug Pettit, board of directors; Gene Saunders, board of director-permanent; Nick Zervos, LCIF coordinator; Stan Stewart, membership chairman; and Scott Reager, immediate past president.

If you are a motorist and haven’t been informed, there has been a change at the intersection of Fifth Street and Jefferson Avenue in Moundsville.

Motorists are asked to use caution in this area as it might take time for drivers to adjust to a new four-way stop.

Four major events will be undertaken at the Strand Theatre in Moundsville. They are:

– Tony M Music at 11 a.m. on July 11, and Musical Cabaret at 7 p.m. the same day.

– The SpongeBob Musical, a musical on July 26-28.

– Cody Clark Magician at 11 a.m. on July 30.

Strand Theatre personnel want people to mark their calendar for Aug. 16, as they are planning an event like no other!

Attendances will experience a concert as never before, choosing their preference between traditional festival seating in the balcony or standing on the floor.

To open up more space for dancing, many of floor level seats will be removed.

There will be limited seating on the floor.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with the show starting at 7:30 p.m.

Yacht Rocket is a vibrant and exciting 10-piece band celebrating the ’70s and ’80s.

Balcony tickets are available tickets at Frame & Fortunes on Jefferson Avenue in Moundsville.

David Schofield at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex will lecture on the “Meadowcroft Rockshelter a Half-Century of Prehistoric Preservation.”

He is director of Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village.

He will share the challenges and successes of preserving the open rockshelter excavation for future scientific investigation while maintaining public access and providing educational programming at the site’s newly renovated museum.
