Marshall Memo: Cruising to Moundsville; Back to School; and Golf
The initial arrival of the American Cruise Lines ship to Moundsville will occur Thursday, July 11th at 6 a.m. Guests will be leaving the ship named the American Melody beginning at approximately 9 a.m.
The visitors have pre-registered, and there are currently 28 taking a tour of the former Penitentiary in the morning, 35 taking the bus to the downtown loop for shopping in the morning, and 45 in the afternoon. The next stop will be Sunday, and more stops will occur over the next month. They have already increased the stops for 2025.
City Manager Rick Healy asks that if any residents see any of the visitors during the week to welcome them to the city. Vice Mayor David Wood will be representing the city to guests and will present a book about Moundsville for the ship’s library.

The 24th annual Marshall County Back 2 School Fun Fair will be held Wednesday, July 31 at the Moundsville Center from 9 a.m. until noon. The “Fun Fair is open to any Marshall County School student in pre-K through 12th grade. Each student will receive a free backpack filled with school supplies such as pencils, pens, notebooks and more.
Other free services will be offered during the “Fun Fair,” will consist of check-ups provided by the Marshall County Health Department. Haircuts/styles will also be offered, in all, nearly 50 different agencies will be on hand to assist students and parents.

The June Food Giveaway was held last week with Healy thanking employees from the Street Department, Police Department, City Hall, and Parks and Recreation for helping at the event. In all, food boxes were provided to 210 households. There will be another distribution in July.

The Strand Theatre Preservation Society welcomes live theater to Moundsville with its production of the SpongeBob Musical! The show runs July 26 and 27 at 7 p.m., and July 28 at 2 p.m. A portion of the proceeds benefit the Tiffany Dlesk Spay-Neuter Clinic.

Healy announced several updates recently including that concrete repair work on Mulberry Avenue is complete, and the street has reopened. Third Street near Curtis Avenue is to be the next project for the Street Department with the work to begin as the Sanitary Department completes their work.
Also, the new point of sale system at the pool is now in operation. A reminder that sales tax is now being charged on all purchases, and credit and debt cards are now accepted.
Due to an error in the bid documents, the paving project is being rebid. Bid opening will be on July 16 and will be on the agenda for that night’s Council Meeting.

There will be a free film showing on Tuesday at the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library. The starting time will be at 6 p.m. on July 9th, in the downstairs meeting room. The featured movie will be “The Boys in the Boat.” The 2023 film is rated PG-13. It runs for 128 minutes.

The 18th annual Honeywell Junior Golf Invitational event will take place on July 29 at the Moundsville Country Club with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The total of participants taking part will be limited to 108 with entry fee being $10.

Marshall County Schools will hold a monthly legal clinic “Lawyer in the Schools” at the Board of Education. This service is provided by Legal Aid of West Virginia. The dates are July 9, Aug. 12, Sept. 9, Oct. 14, Nov. 12 and Dec. 9 with clinic hours being 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.
