Marshall Memo: First Day of School; and ‘Fools’ Parade’ Showing

Tuesday is the first day of school for Marshall County students in grades 1-12. The first day of school for kindergarten students will be Wednesday, Aug. 21.

The Marshall County Board of Education approved several personnel matters at its meeting held this past Tuesday.

Resignations included Rick Young, custodian, Glen Dale Elementary, effective Nov. 30, 2024.

Employment/Transfers included Claudia Callahan, Teacher of Kindergarten, Cameron Elementary and Samantha Fouty, from Teacher at Plays to Teacher of Grade Five, Hilltop Elementary; Joseph Thomas from Substitute Aide to Aide/ECCAT McNinch Primary; John Mercer from Bus Operator, Rte 55/Safety Team to Custodian III, John Marshall High School; and Courtney Blake from Substitute Cook to Custodian III at Cameron Elementary.

Substitute Aides include, Bailey Blake, Nekesha Wood, Amy. Minton. Substitute cooks include Tracy Rogerson andLaura Chaney; and Joyce Howard was added as a substitute custodian.

Coaches/Advisors approved include James Hartle, Volunteer Assistant Golf Coach, John Marshall High School/Citizen Coach; Joshua Morgan, Golf Assistant Coach, JMHS/Citizen Coach; Jacob Myers, Assistant Coach Girls’ Soccer, John Marshall; Melanie Knutson, National Technical Honor Society Co-Advisor, JMHS; Lora Van Nest, National Technical Honor Society Co-Advisor, JMHS.

Grand Vue Park will host a Comedy Show & Dinner on Aug. 24 in the Banquet Hall. Dinner will be from 6-7:30 p.m. with the comedy show form 7:30- 9 p.m. The dinner will consist of an all you can eat BBQ buffet. The event will feature Chris Young and Bill Bender. At 7 p.m. Sept. 6, the classic 1971 movie filmed in Moundsville, “Fools’ Parade” will be shown at the Strand Theatre. Admission is $7 with doors opening 30 minutes prior to showtime.

The Strand will also be the location of a yard sale on Sept. 21. If you have items to donate, you can drop them off on Sept. 14 from 9 a.m. to noon or Sept. 16-19 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Cockayne Farmstead’s World War II Weekend will take place Sept. 7-8.

It will be known as, “Our Veterans, Our History” and will take place at John Marshall High School. There will be military vehicles, re-enactor displays and meet with local veterans.

The times will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 7, and 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Sept. 8. There will also be a Car Show from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday. A 1940s Dance with music Matt Hill and Friends will be held at St. Jude Hall on Saturday from, 7-10 p.m.

On Saturday, Aug. 31, the Marshall County Family Resource Network will be hosting a free community event “Planting Mindfulness: Gardening with Grandparents.” It will be held from 1-3 p.m. at Riverfront Park in Moundsville. There will be fun activities, giveaways, and resources aimed at grandparents and grandchildren. The event is sponsored by Northern Panhandle PAT, Marshall County PAT, WVSU Healthy Grandfamilies Program, NAMI Greater Wheeling, Marshall County FRN, and City of Moundsville Arts & Culture Commission.
