John Marshall High School To Induct 8 Into Hall of Fame

Seven athletes and one coach have been selected by committee members for the John Marshall High School Hall of Fame.

This is the fourth year for the HOF and with the current inductees will bring the total number to 38.

Cindy Lawther, Coach

Cindy retired this past June after 47 years working as a speech language pathologist with Marshall County Schools. After West Virginia began girls’ soccer in 1995 with eight schools, she campaigned hard for Marshall County Schools to add a team at John Marshall High School, which they did starting in 1996. She took over the coaching responsibilities during the 1997 season and coaching for 14 seasons. During her time as coach, the Lady Monarchs won 3 OVAC titles and reached a high ranking of third in the state. She was named OVAC girls’ soccer coach of the year 3 years times and coached in 9 OVAC All-Star games.

Mike Mason, Athlete

He graduated from JMHS in 1981, excelling in both baseball and basketball. He went on to play baseball at then-West Liberty State College where he was first team all-conference and all-region as a pitcher his senior year. He also won the 1984 Gene Waldron Award, a National NAIA Award given to junior baseball scholar. He is currently President of United Security Agency, an independent insurance agency, where he has worked since 1995.

Rodney Persinger, Athlete

Rodney is a two-time West Virginia state wrestling champion. He and his wife, Pamela, live in Ohio County with their four sons. He graduated from Penn State with a mining engineering degree. He has worked the last three decades in the mining industry, currently as a contact fire-boss for D&E Services of Fairmont. His hobbies include coaching youth baseball and wrestling, classic cars and weekends at lake with family.

Mike Tennant, Athlete

Tennant currently lives in McMechen with his wife, Mitzi, and is the father of four sons.

He graduated from JMHS in 1980 and attended WVU and Marshall on a full athletic scholarship for golf. While at John Marshall he lettered all three years and led the team in scoring average every year. He lettered all four years and won a couple collegiate golf tournaments

After graduating from college, he turned professional and was a member of the Professional Golfers Association in the 1980s. He left the golf business and later earned his teacher’s certification and has been employed by the Marshall County Board of Education since 2000 and currently teaches Social Studies at John Marshall.

Scott Pettit, Athlete

He was born and raised in Glen Dale and graduated from John Marshall High School in 1997 with a 4.0 GPA.

Scott was the captain of the first and only John Marshall West Virginia Class AAA State Championship Football team in 1996 and was the “Mr. Monarch” award recipient in 1997. He was the first three-year starter on both offense and defense in school history and won several accolades throughout his high school football playing career. In addition, Scott was a three-year starter on the basketball team, where he broke the record for the most points scored in one season by a sophomore. Also, he was a three-time state qualifier in the hurdles for the track team.

Following high school, he continued an athletic career at Marshall University, he was a four-time letterman for the Thundering Herd. Since graduation, Scott has spent over 20 years in the biomedical industry in various leadership position with both Pfizer and Novo Nordisk. He currently resides in Wheeling with his wife, Mina, and is the father of three children.

Kevin Snyder, athlete

He was a three-year letter winner in football and two-year letter winner in track. He broke the single game rushing yards in a playoff game in 1996. He was WTOV 9 player of the week, captain of the Rudy Mumley All-Star football game, named first team All-State, Upper Ohio Valley Dapper Dan Outstanding Achievement Award 1997.

After high school, he continued his education at West Liberty, obtained a bachelor’s degree in Physical and Health Education. He is a Master Class Sporting Clay Shooter with multiple first place finishes. He is a volunteer for many duties associated with the YMCA Cardinal Aquatics Swim Club. He is an Engineering Technician for the DOH.

Scott Yanke- Athlete

Yanke was a three-year starter in basketball for the Monarchs. His junior and senior years he led the team in scoring, rebounding, and field goal percentage. He finished his career as the school’s leader in points scored (1,341) and rebounds (667).

Scott continued his playing career at Morehead State (Kentucky) University for one season before transferring to the University of Charleston where he scored 1,260 points and pulled down 800 rebounds in 80 games. He currently lives in Glen Dale.

Alex Inclan, Athlete

He graduated at John Marshall High School in 1993 as the Valedictorian of his class, where he participated for three years in football, basketball and baseball and was named Mr. Monarch in 1993.

In football and basketball he was a two-year starter and co-captain as a senior, while in baseball he was a three-time letter winner and senior co-captain.

After high school he continued his football and baseball careers at Division I Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. He was a two-year member of the football team and a three-year starter on the baseball team.

Currently Alex is employed at WVU Medicine as director of finance for Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Barnsville Hospital and Harrison Community Hospital.

He lives in Glen Dale with his wife Katie and 3 children.
