Marshall Memo: Holiday Music, Activities and More

The John Marshall High School Music Department is pleased to invite the public to celebrate the holiday season at a combined Christmas concert.

The seventh annual Monarch Tidings is on Thursday, Dec. 12, at 6 p.m. in the JMHS Center for Performing Arts.

The student-produced, one day only event will feature selections from a combination of ensembles including concert band, steel band, concert choir, Monarch Choir, women’s ensemble, chamber orchestra, string orchestra and symphony orchestra. Morgan Carlin and Ash Roth will serve as hosts of the show.

Some of the festive tunes will include “There is a Santa Claus” and “Faeries” along with well-known favorites “The Grinch,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Merry Christmas, Darling.”

This holiday event is sponsored by the Karl and Mildred Niekamp Charitable Foundation and is open to the public.

Tickets will be sold at the door. Admission price is $10 for adults, $5 for K-12 students, and free for children under 5.

If you have a personalized Marshall County Schools Activity Pass, admission is free.

WJMH Media will share the performance in its entirety on its YouTube channel beginning on Tuesday, Dec. 17. If you would prefer to watch on TV, WTRF ABC Ohio Valley will air the performance on Christmas Eve from 6-7 p.m. and again on Christmas morning from 6-7 a.m.

On Tuesday December 10 at 6 p.m., Glen Dale Elementary students will be present a public performance at the school titled “Christmas dreams, large or small, can come true for one and all.”

The musical lets you know that under evergreen trees all over the world, Santa’s toys come alive on Christmas Eve. For a period of time when you are and your family are asleep, there is a genuine glee under the tree with marching toy soldiers, beautiful dolls, marionettes dancing off their strings, teddy bears that tango, rag dolls that rock and roll, and so much more.

Donations will be accepted at the door and will benefit he GDES music department.

“Christmas on the Avenue” will be held Dec. 14 from 5-8 p.m. at Fifth Street and Jefferson Avenue in Moundsville.

Activities will include, ornament making, letters to Santa, a balloon artist, horse and carriage rides, train rides, hot chocolate, visits with Santa, and lighting of the city Christmas tree. There will also be food trucks on site during the event.

The Strand Theatre has several upcoming holiday events for all to enjoy. The Ron Retzer Trio will perform “Christmas at the Strand on Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. with admission of $15.

A Children’s Christmas Craft/Movie Event will be on Dec. 14. The craft will be at 1:15 p.m. while the movie will start at 2 p.m. This event is free.

“Christmas Cabaret will be held Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. with admission costing $10.

Moundsville City Manager Rick Healy wants to thank “everyone who assisted and participated in the Moundsville Christmas parade.”

In his report for last week’s council meeting, Healy gave a special thanks to the street department and police department, “who without them, the parade could no take place.”

Other updates in his report include the success of the annual Black Friday Sale at the pool. A record number of 86 passes were sold with a total revenue of over $14,000.

Last week Central Elementary hosted a career day with Healy, Police Chief Mitchell and Officer Rawls taking part.

On Wednesday, Dec. 18, at noon, the annual city employees’ Christmas luncheon will be held. This is the third year the even will take place at the Volunteer Fire Department.
