Marshall Memo: Knights of the Golden Horseshoe; Social Studies; and Spring Fling

Marshall County’s spring is bursting with pride, from young scholars to dedicated volun-teers. Here’s what’s happening to keep our community thriving.

Sherrard Middle School 8th graders Brady Barnhart, Kabe Blake, James Lopez, and Drew Marling are Marshall County’s 2025 West Virginia Golden Horseshoe winners, recognized for their outstanding knowledge of state history, government, and culture. Since 1931, the Golden Horseshoe test has challenged students on West Virginia’s past and present, with winners chosen by county based on population. The four will be inducted as Knights of the Golden Horseshoe Society during a pinning ceremony at the West Virginia Cultural Center in Charleston on June 10.

Marshall County Schools came out on top at the 2025 West Virginia State Social Studies Fair in Charleston on Friday, securing six 1st-place, three 2nd-place, two 3rd-place, and three honorable mention awards. The fair, launched in 1977 by the West Virginia Department of Education and Marshall University, featured 349 projects from 43 counties, judged on research, presentations and design. The 100% volunteer-run museum needs help with artifacts, accepting donations, and keeping doors open, while the farmstead requires hands for grounds maintenance and event planning. To volunteer, learn more, or schedule a museum visit, contact the Society at marshallwvhistor-icalsociety@gmail.com or 304-845-1411.
