Marshall Memo: Ladies Luncheon; Relay for Life; the Strand; and Municipal Updates

The Marshall County Chamber of Commerce invites you to the annual Ladies Luncheon at noon April 10 at the Moundsville Country Club.

At the event, they’ll announce this year’s Pioneer Woman of the Year.

Tickets are $25, so call Cheryl Kaczor at 304-845-2772 to reserve yours fast.

Expect raffles, door prizes, and a wine and chocolate basket raffle at $5 each or 5 for $20. The winner will be drawn at the event, but you don’t need to be there to claim it.

While we’re on the topic of community gatherings, Relay for Life Team Limestone for Angels & Survivors hosts the 10th annual “Baking for Hope” Bingo on April 26 at the Limestone Community Center to support the American Cancer Society.

Entry is $10 at the door; doors open at noon with lunch, including homemade noodles, kielbasa and kraut, mashed potatoes, chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, sauce dogs, sloppy joes, tacos in a bag, and a goody table of home-baked treats.

At 1 p.m., 16 straight-line bingo games begin, offering prizes like pies, cakes, casseroles, and trifles in reusable containers.

You’ll also find quilt and bag raffles, a 50/50 drawing, a cake auction, and special games.

Proceeds fund ACS research, screenings, prevention, and patient support for the Relay for Life of Marshall County event on May 30, from 6-10 p.m., at the John Marshall High North Parking Lot.

For details, text Karen Coffield at 304-780-9864. Get out and support cancer angels and survivors.

Shifting from community events to local progress, the April 1 Moundsville City Council meeting brought updates on the new Municipal Building.

Over the past two weeks, a water line was installed to Jefferson Avenue, a storm sewer was added on the north side, soffit, fascia, gutters, and coping were completed, first-floor temporary power shifted to permanent ceiling lights, electrical and fire suppression work continued, and a first-floor concrete pour was finished.

In the next two weeks, expect more work on soffit, fascia, and gutters, a snow guard on the roof, wired rooftop units, and restarted framing, plus the start of the roof over the radius entry and resumed plumbing and masonry.

The Strand Theatre at 811 5th St. is gearing up for its 2025 Strand’s Got Talent show, with auditions on April 15 from 6-7 p.m.

All acts are welcome, from singing to standup comedy, as long as they’re under five minutes.

You can also submit a video audition to Kelley Bidka at progdirector@strandtheatrewv.com by April 14 at 11:59 p.m.

Up to 10 acts will be picked for the live show at 7 p.m. May 9, where three judges will award $300 for first place plus a spot at MACC Jefferson Fridays, $200 for second, and $100 for third, with tickets at $15 for adults and $12 for students.

The Strand’s upcoming show recalls a bright moment in its history–105 years ago this month, the theater opened its doors as the first steel-framed building in West Virginia. Owner Merton A. Sybert welcomed crowds who arrived by showboat along the Ohio River, eager for Vaudeville acts and later first-run films, lighting up the town with entertainment. Now restored, the Strand continues its legacy with events like the upcoming Strand’s Got Talent show.

Starting at $2.99/week.
