Marshall Memo: Strings Concert; City Building Progress; and Some Odds and Ends

The Marshall County Strings Program will present its annual spring concert on Tuesday, April 29, at the John Marshall High School Center for Performing Arts. The concert will be presented in two performances. Elementary and middle school students will perform at 6 p.m., and high school students will perform at 7:30 p.m. Audience members are welcome to attend one or both performances.

Additionally, the strings program will present a check to CASA for Children Inc. This donation was made possible with funds collected at the strings benefit concert this past February.

Admission for the concert is $5 for adults, $1 for students (K-12), and free for children 5 and under. Marshall County Schools Activity Passes and Marshall County Student IDs will be accepted in lieu of concert admission.

On April 15, Moundsville City Manager Rick Healy had a Progress Meeting regarding the new Moundsville City Building currently under construction. The general contractor advised that over the last two weeks soffit, fascia, and gutter installation continued, as well as electrical work and wiring of the rooftop units. Framing has been started on the walls and roof on the second floor, and storm sewer installation was started. The goals for the next two weeks, will be the roof over the radius (lobby) area, more framing and electrical, and a concrete pour of the lobby area. The electrician will also begin to remediate some of the non-conforming work issues.

Also on April 15 was the regular City Council meeting. City Manager Rick Healy gave the following updates about notable events happening in Moundsville. The Riverfront Park LWCF Project has started. The entire shelter is not usable at this time as the restrooms have been gutted, and excavation has started on the sidewalk around the facility.

Five On Trac Interior Grants awarded for a total of $10,000 and two Exterior Grants awarded for a total of $4,000. Two additional interior grant applications have also been received.

The Parr’s Run Bridge Project is reported to be ahead of schedule, with the expected completion date moved up to June. City Manager Healy is waiting for an update from Charleston on the Elm Avenue Bridge Project. The district personnel said it was in the ROW stage.

The lights along Jefferson Avenue between 2nd and 3rd were inspected, and it was determined that the main power line was cut during the fire. A request has been made to AEP for reconnection, and once completed, the electrician will verify all lights are working properly. There was only one pole and light that was damaged during the fire, and it will be replaced once the remediation is completed.

Plastic film and bags collection has increased significantly with 591 pounds already collected.

The Easter Drive Thru was a success again this year. The total amount of bags distributed was approximately 150.

Thirteen Eighth Grade English Class students from Sherrard Middle School had a clean-up day at East End Park. They raked leaves and did general cleanup of the park. Director White wants to publicly thank them for their help.

There are openings on the Building Commission and the Housing Authority. Please contact City Manager if you have interest in serving your city on either of these boards.

On Saturday, May 3, St. Jude Church will be holding a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to noon at their hall located at 710 Jefferson Avenue in Glen Dale.

The Memorial Service and installation of new officers for the Marshall County Association of Retired School Employees (MCARSE) will be on May 8, 2025 at the Guest House Restaurant in Moundsville, beginning at 11:30. The community service project is to bring Crayola crayons for the Fun Fair to be held in July. Call Lexie by May 1 to reserve your seat at the restaurant.
