Marshall Memo: Scholarships Awarded as Students Prepare To Kick Off School Year

Each year, the Marshall County Chamber of Commerce is proud to award scholarships to graduating seniors from Cameron High School and/or John Marshall High School.

These scholarships support a mission of encouraging academic achievement and helping local students take the next step toward their future. The scholarship criteria include GPA, community involvement, attendance, studies and future plans. Essays are submitted to the Marshall County Chamber of Commerce committee, which reviews and selects winners.

Support is always welcomed by the Scholarship Fund, where 100% of the donations received go directly to selected students to assist with their college expenses. Donations can be mailed or dropped off at the Marshall County Chamber of Commerce, 609 Jefferson Ave., Moundsville, WV 26041. Write “Scholarship Fund” in the memo line of your check.

If you wish to make your donation in honor or memory of someone special, note that as well, and the committee will include their name in its acknowledgment of scholarship supporters.

The Christmas in July event on Jefferson Avenue in Moundsville was a big success.

The Marshall County Family Resource Network had goody bags for the kids and Smiley Ann’s Photo Van was on hand for fun pictures. There were also raffles, sidewalk sales, food trucks and a surprise appearance by the Grinch.

The FRN urges you to continue to support Moundsville small business and restaurants all year long.

There are several activities at Marshall County libraries this coming week.

At the Moundsville location, Hungry for History with the Marshall County Historical Society will be held at noon Monday. Author Jeffery L. Smalldon will discuss his book “The Beast Was Not Me.” This book covers five decades of conversations with killers.

On Tuesday, Mush! With Noggin the sled dog (and her human) — a part of the summer reading program — will be held at 11 a.m.; at 11:30 a.m., there will be a pop-up farmers market with WVU Extension Service, and at 6 p.m., Karen Vuranch will perform a living history portrayal of Mae West.

At 11 a.m. Thursday will be the end of summer reading pizza party (registration is required).

At the Benwood-McMechen location, at 2 p.m. Tuesday will be Mush! With Noggin the sled dog (and her human), part of the summer reading program, and at 2:30 p.m. that day will be the Pop-up farmers market with WVU Extension.

At 2 p.m. Thursday will be the end of summer reading pizza party with registration required.

Marshall County students return to school next month, so if you do not already have a Marshall County Free Activity Pass, you can call the Board of Education Office at 304-843-4400 to make an appointment to obtain one.

All Marshall County residents are eligible; however, children under 5 do not need a pass, and middle and high school students can use their school identification for free admission.

When you come to your appointment to get the picture for the ID, bring proof of residency. If needing a pass for an elementary age student, they must also come to the appointment, as IDs must have the pass holder’s picture.

The pass provides free admission to every Marshall County Schools-sponsored event including WVSSAC-sanctioned events held at Marshall County School facilities (excluding OVAC tournaments and sectional, regional, and state events).

Music events are also free to attend with the pass including band, chorus and strings concerts, the JMHS marching band showcase as well as musicals and plays.

The Queen of Queens pageant is also free to attend with the pass.

The free activity pass must be presented at each event to get free admission; however, additional fees such as parking, concessions, donations and souvenirs are not covered by the pass.

The free passes are made possible, in part, by the generosity of the Marshall County residents who supported the renewal of the operating levy.

The 2025 Back to School Fun Fair is this coming Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Moundsville Center.

There will be breakfast of doughnuts and milk, free health screenings, backpacks, school supplies and toiletries, as well as a chance to win tickets to Kennywood or to win a new bike.

Everything at the event is FREE.

There will be two new assistant principals at Marshall County schools beginning next week.

Michael Murphy will be an assistant principal at Moundville Middle School. He was previously teacher of music at Sherrard Middle School.

Timothy Jones will be a new assistant principal at John Marshall High School where he was most recently a teacher of math.

Starting at $2.99/week.
