Marshall Memo: Events at the Library; Shrimp Boil; and the Strand
There will be several program offerings next week at the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library. At 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, the library is teaming with Marshall County Schools to promote the importance of literacy and a love of reading as part of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Day. Shelby Haines, superintendent of Marshall County Schools, is the guest reader. She will share the Book “Corduroy,” by Don Freeman.
At 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, is Book Club — “Jefferson’s Sons” — by Kimberly Brubaker. On Thursday, Aug. 7 there is a book talk with Jacob Strautmann and Christina Fisanick, with books available for signing and purchase. Rounding out the week will be Yoga with Diane at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8.

There are several events upcoming at the Strand Theatre. An all-you-can-eat shrimp boil is scheduled for Aug. 16 at the Red Barn on Eastern 4th Street in Moundsville. Doors will open at 6 p.m., with the first dump ready at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $30 per person and no outside beverages permitted; however, drink tickets will be available.
Entertainment will be provided by Mark Palmer. Tickets are available at www.strandtheatrewv.com/events or at Frame and Fortunes or Ruttenberg’s.
The online registration for winter children’s acting classes opened Friday. Classes will start on Sept. 27 and end on Nov. 1. The cost for the six-week session is $75 and all classes will be held at the Strand Theatre.
Level 1 classes, Introduction to Acting, will meet from 9-9:55 a.m. and are for children in kindergarten through third grade. In this level, young performers will build confidence, imagination and stage presence in a playful introduction to acting. There will be games, creative movement, and storytelling where the students will explore characters, emotions, and basic performance skills. At the end of the session, a short play will be performed by the students for family and friends.
Level 2 classes, Acting and Performance Skills, are for those students in fourth to eighth grade and will be held from 10-10:55 a.m. In this class, budding actors will dive into a variety of acting techniques including character development, voice work, improvisations, and stage direction. Participants will grow their confidence, performance skills, and collaboration while bringing a script to life. A live performance will be held for friends and family at the end of the session.
It’s not too early to think about the Fall Yard Sale at the Strand to be held from 8 a.m. until noon Saturday, Sept. 20, with a half hour break before reopening from 12:30-2 p.m. where items will be 50% off or fill a box for $5. The Strand will be accepting gently used items for the sale from 9 a.m. until noon Saturday, Sept. 13, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily Sept. 15-18. No clothing or shoes will be accepted for the sale.

The Marshall County Family Resource Network plans to offer “Workforce Workshop” every other month beginning on Aug. 14. At these workshops, you can get help with resume creation and review, job searches, filling out job applications, interview skills, and more. Timeslots will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. by appointment and can be scheduled by calling 304-845-3300.
The staff can also schedule alternate dates/times if necessary.
The FRN is located at 1501 Second St. in Moundsville.
The Marshall County FRN will also be holding a Fresh Produce Swap and Share from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Aug. 21 in the FRN parking lot located at 1501 Second Avenue in Moundville.
Home growers in the community are invited to come together and share fruits, vegetables and herbs, if you have excess produce, you can bring it to the event to swap for something from another garden.
