Editor, News-Register: Although I must admit that I am a bit disappointed that the historically iconic Wheeling Suspension Bridge will remain permanently closed to vehicular traffic, it will nonetheless continue as a pedestrian bridge, as recently announced by the West Virginia Division of Highways. However, it does appear quite evident that every effort was made to attempt to make the suspension bridge open once again to vehicular traffic, as a reported $17.9 million was spent to rehabilitate the bridge. The City of Wheeling lost one of its best public servants with the passing of Rusty Jebbia at age 71. Jebbia spent 44 years with the city in numerous roles, starting as part of Wheeling’s engineering department, moving to assistant city manager and wrapping up his career as the city’s director of public works. Food insecurity may seem to many of us like a problem for someone else, somewhere else. For others, it is an urgent and very personal worry. A map produced by the Institute for Local Self Reliance shows there are food deserts in every state. In Ohio, they are growing.
