Cameron Dragons Defeat Valley Lumberjacks

PINE GROVE -- Valley's defense kept Cameron at bay early, but the Dragons' explosive weapons could not be contained in the second half.
Isaac Ball opened the third quarter with a 55-yard kickoff return and Jessop Broughton found Garrett Scott for 65 yards -- both plays setting up touchdowns -- and Noah Neely delivered his third play of 45-plus yards for a score as Cameron rolled past Valley, 34-6, on Friday night.
Neely finished with 100 yards rushing on three carries and added a 65-yard touchdown reception to his total, while hauling in an interception on defense.
"He has worked really hard from spring all the way through the summer at getting his speed and strength up," Cameron coach Tim Brown said. "He really hit the weight room hard.
"Him and Jessop (Broughton) just click. Jessop knows where he's at and our offensive line opened up some nice holes for him and he takes off. He has some speed and he goes."
It took two offensive plays for Neely to strike on the Dragons' first possession as he broke a 45-yard touchdown run but Valley wasn't going away easily.
The Lumberjacks drove down the field and looked to be on the verge of scoring when a holding penalty killed the drive and eventually forced a punt.
"We drove down to the 10 but a holding penalty brought it back," Valley coach Logan Miller said. "That's exactly what happened last week. We drove down to the 1-yard line and holding brought it back. We can't get behind the chains."
Neely, again, took advantage. This time with a 65-yard touchdown reception from Broughton down the visitors' sideline. A missed PAT made it a 13-0 game with 2:10 left in the first.
Valley seemed to find the Dragons' kryptonite toward the end of the half in the form of 265-pound offensive tackle Wyatt Dallison.
The lineman set up in the backfield and rumbled his way for 35 yards on six carries in a drive that was ultimately cut short as time ran out in the half.
The momentum was short-lived as Ball took the second-half kickoff and raced 55 yards to the Valley 20-yard line. On the next play, Ian Bush covered the final yardage, going untouched for six.
"We always say that special teams plays are deflate plays," Brown said. "They can really deflate a team and I think that happened a little bit. Valley kind of contained us (Friday) but you have to give them credit for doing everything they could to try to slow us down."
That was all she wrote as the next three Valley possessions went punt, punt, interception.
Cameron added a score on its next drive as Broughton found Scott from 1-yard out, after the two connected for a 65-yard burst down to the 1-yard line.
The Dragons' final score came on Neely's 45-yard touchdown explosion.
"Cameron is a good football team," Miller said. "We knew that coming in. They've been successful and they know how to win.
"Our kids have to figure out how to get mean and be able to play in the trenches. We have a bunch of great guys on the team but they need to get mean on Friday nights."
The lone score from the Lumberjacks came mid-way through the fourth as Dallison rattled off 10 carries for 50 yards and a 5-yard touchdown plunge.
He finished with 16 carries and 85 yards.
"We had our center go down," Miller said. "We had to move our tight end to center, which kind of handicapped us. We found something that worked in our jumbo package. We'll have to work off of that package in weeks to come."
Brown's squad outgained Valley, 343-167, and held the Lumberjacks to 34 yards passing.
"Coach Matt Carnahan has been studying these films and he gets them ready to rock and roll," Brown said. "They are listening to what he's telling them and he makes things really simple so they can play fast.
"And we are getting a good look from some of our younger kids who are on the scout defense. They are doing a great job and that really helps us figure out what we need to work on."
