CHARLESTON -- John Korte drilled a 3-pointer with 54 seconds left to break a 66-66 tie to help Wheeling University stun No. 25 Charleston 71-66 during Wednesday's Mountain East Conference matchup.
The win improved Wheeling to 11-8 and 8-7 in Mountain East Conference play. The Golden fell to 17-4 and 11-3 in the MEC.
Korte also secured a steal and drilled two free throws with 13 seconds left for the Cardinals. The freshman finished the night with 10 points.
Jarrett Haines led the way for the Cardinals with 24 points while going 10 of 19 from the field while Jordan Reid supplied 15.
For the Golden Eagles, Drew Rackley led the way with a game-high 26 points while Lamont McManus was solid with 20.

INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- No. 20-ranked West Liberty saw a game-tying 3-point shot fall off the iron at the buzzer as West Virginia State held on for a wild upset win at the Walker Center.
The loss snapped an 11-game winning streak for Coach Ben Howlett's Hilltoppers (17-4, 12-3), who retained their one-game lead in the Mountain East Conference thanks to No. 25 Charleston's upset loss to Wheeling.
Yoakum just missed a double-double with 29 points and nine rebounds.
Bolon hit seven 3-pointers and added 28 points along with 9 rebounds before fouling out with 2 minutes to go. Dyer added 14 points and 5 assists as WLU went 35-of-82 (42 percent) from the floor, 16-of-46 (34 percent) from the 3-point arc and 7-of-8 (87 percent) from the foul line.
Abram poured in 28 of his game-high 38 points in the first half with Noel adding 22 points.

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's basketball team splashed home four straight free throws in the final 9 seconds here Wednesday night to seal a victory against West Virginia State at the Walker Center.
Coach Kyle Cooper's Hilltoppers (9-12, 5-10) never trailed in the second half but had to hold off a late surge by the host Yellow Jackets (8-13, 6-9) to post their second straight victory.
After Olivia Belknap hit two free throws for a 72-68 lead with 9 seconds left, the Hilltoppers delivered a big defensive stop and Taylor Johnson closed out the scoring with a pair of charity tosses at the 4-second mark.
Johnson led a balanced attack for WLU, scoring 11 of her 16 points in the first half.
Morgan Brunner added a 12 points with four 3-pointers while Thomas and Belknap finished with 11 points each. Tingle stuffed the stat sheet once more with nine points, seven assists and five rebounds. Jackie Kitts grabbed a game and career-high 10 rebounds.

CHARLESTON -- The Wheeling University women's basketball team was handed a loss in Charleston.
The Cardinals fall to 8-13 on the season and 7-8 in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles improve to 17-4 and 12-3 in conference play.
Sophomore forward Lilly Ritz posted another impressive outing. The reigning MEC Player of the Week scored 33 points and had 21 rebounds to go with three blocks in the loss. Senior guard Khira Burton was the Cardinals second leading scorer with 11 points in the loss.
