Wheeling University Volleyball Opens Season at No. 24 In AVCA D-II Poll

2 min read

LEXINGTON -- The Wheeling University volleyball team checked in at No. 24 in the American Volleyball Coaches of America Division II Preseason Poll released earlier this month.

Nebraska-Kearney received 17 first-place votes and sits atop the poll to start the season. Perennial-powers Concordia-St. Paul and Cal State San Bernardino rounded out the top-three.

The Cardinals, under 20th-year head coach Christy Benner, are coming off of their eighth-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament Atlantic Region Title Match and return senior All-American libero Audrey Francis. Francis ranked seventh in Division II in 2019 with 6.07 digs per set and sixth nationally with 722 total digs.

Also returning will be junior middle blocker Allonda Watkins, an All-MEC Honorable Mention selection in 2019, who led the team and ranked third in the MEC with 1.13 blocks per set. She also ranked second on the team and seventh in the league with a .295 hitting percentage.

Benner will have a relatively young team with a lot of new faces, but a trio of transfers from Urbana and a NJCAA All-American will help provide a veteran presence. Senior Kaitlin Trace and juniors Lexi Reinert and Jenna Franks were on the 2019 MEC Tournament runner-up Blue Knights team. Meanwhile, junior transfer Kayla Bekier joins the Cardinals after earning NJCAA Division III All-American honors at Owens Community College in 2019.

Wheeling will begin its 10-match conference-only schedule on Tuesday, Feb. 2 when it travels to take on Fairmont State at 7 p.m.
