The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission released their new guidelines for middle school and high school winter sports for the 2021 season.
According to a release it sent out, there will be five guidelines that will take place.
The guidelines go as follows:
∫ Parents, grandparents and household members will be the only ones allowed to be in attendance for all winter sport contests, with the exception of swimming. Facility guidelines and limitations will determine how many can attend swim meets.
Attendance will also vary according to facility guidelines come tournament time.
∫ If a county/school is designated as remote learning only, no practices or contests may be held during that time period.
∫ Once a county/school resumes either in person or blended learning, practices and contests may resume.
∫ Only the home team will sport cheerleaders and will follow the same attendance guidelines as the players. Due to limited space, the SSAC also recommended that cheerleading squads be split and alternate games attended to reduce the number of cheerleaders on the floor for basketball.
∫ Administrator and country board of education (staff and board) C&I cards will be accepted. Coach C&I cards will not be accepted.
West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice announced on Jan. 11 that high school winter sports may return to practice on Feb. 15 and competition can be begin March 3.
It has informed schools that they will be allowed a week of conditioning before winter sports practices begins.
Before a team can compete in any games, it must get in 14 practices.
