PARKERSBURG -- Class AAAA No. 7 Wheeling Park drained 8 of 16 from downtown Saturday night inside Memorial Fieldhouse and received a game-high 26 points from Avery Lee as the Patriots held off Parkersburg, 63-57.
Head coach Michael Jebbia's squad got four 3s from Lee and the other quartet from Beau Heller, who finished with 17 points. Point guard DJ Saunders dished out a game-high 10 assists and added five counters.
Bryson Singer led the 0-3 Big Reds with 23 points and game-highs of 16 rebounds and two steals.
A Julian Martin putback with 5:17 left in the first half gave PHS a 24-20 lead, but the red and white didn't make a field goal the rest of the half, getting two free throws from Singer and one by Josh Kopec as the Patriots rallied for a 31-27 halftime advantage. A Saunders no-look dime to Caleb Francis, who scored nine points off the bench, tied it at 25-25 and a Brett Phillips foul shot but the visitors ahead for good.
Lee had two 3s in the third and when Heller connected from deep at the 1:57 mark, Wheeling Park (4-3) had opened a 42-31 advantage. Sammy McCale's triple via a Carson Dennis assist cut it to eight, but the visitors led 43-34 entering the fourth.
Austin Fleming's trifecta early in the fourth kept the Big Reds within nine at 46-37, but a technical foul was later called on the hosts because Luke Fries' jersey number was wrong in the book.
The Patriots, who play Wednesday at Brooke, watched as Heller canned both charity stripe tosses and then Francis scored inside for a 13-point bulge.
PHS didn't quit and tried to use its press to get back in it. Dennis had a steal and a layup and with 1:22 left Singer knocked the ball away from a Patriot player and that led to Kevin Hancock's lay-in, which made it 55-49 with 1:22 remaining. Although Fleming made two free throws with 60 seconds to go to keep it a two-possession game at 57-51, Francis followed with a three-point play and the Big Reds were unable to get it below six.
