GLEN DALE -- After tallying two errors in the first inning, the John Marshall softball team regained its focused and put together a solid effort. Behind a two-hit, seven strike out performance by Kandence Pettit, the Monarchs' offense also tallied nine hits en route to an 8-0 victory over Linsly Thursday night at John Marshall High School.
Pettit also belted a home run in the first inning while Megan Dougherty dialed in on a two-run triple in the second. Ava Blake made it 4-0 in favor of the Monarchs after a RBI single.
"I was pleased overall with our performance," John Marshall coach Ed West West said. "It took us a little while for us to get used to the first pitcher. The second pitcher was more what we were accustomed to speed-wise. We didn't hit the ball as well as we probably should have. Overall, I thought we did what we had to do. Cadence did a nice job on the mound. Our defense was ok most of the time. We had a couple of errors early. Overall, it was a good performance."
Joey Mangino also produced a RBI-single for the Monarchs in the third inning.
And in the fourth, West substituted much of his lineup where a handful his roster got to see playing time.
"That was the plan going in," West said. "Getting this last stretch before sectionals start, I want to get a lot of players in the game, give them all a chance to play. Fortunately, we have players coming off the bench that can play. They can all play and they deserve to play, so that's what I'm doing."
After the Cadets got two quick outs to start the sixth inning, the Monarchs bats started to come back to life. Alexis Cumberledge and Blake secured back-to-back singles. Sophia Adkins made it to base safely on an error throw that resulted in two runs scoring and her making it to third.
Pettit then tallied a single, her second hit of the game, to make it 8-0 and apply the mercy rule.
"It's tough to win a game with two hits, but we put a lot of balls in play," Linsly coach Paul Recrosio said. "Obviously they have heckeva pitcher. We've seen some very good pitching, but not consistently enough. We're having to make adjustments to the speed because we're not used to seeing that speed versus when you see that speed consistently, sometimes it's easier to adjustments. I couldn't be more proud of the girls. We had a lot of quality at bats."
Karena Recrosio supplied the only two hits for the Cadets with her two singles.
It was also the final game of Linsly's 2021 season.
"I feel like we accomplished a tremendous amount in a short period of time," Paul Recrosio said. "I couldn't be more proud of the girls and what they've accomplished and how far they've come. We've got a lot of really good kids coming up and I fully expect them to step in that leadership role next year and beyond."
