Area Athletes Ready For State Track Meet

Championships get started today in Charleston

CHARLESTON -- A plethora of area track athletes will suit up one final time as they make the trip to Charleston for the West Virginia High School state track meet at University Of Charleston Stadium At Laidley Field.

The championships will be held from Wednesday to Saturday.

Class A will kick off the championship week as the 400 and 3200 will be run on Wednesday while the rest of the events will be fielded Thursday. Class AA will hold its 400 and 3200 on Thursday night and will run the remaining events Friday. Class AAA will also run the 400 and 3200 on Friday night and finish up on Saturday.

And not only will there be a handful of athletes competing for state championship, there will also be a few teams vying for a title.

Both Wheeling Park boys and girls teams won their regional title in Class AAA while Oak Glen boys claimed Class AA. The Magnolia boys (Class A) and Oak Glen girls (Class AA) earned runner-up honors.

CLASS AAA

On the boys side, Wheeling Park's Torrence Walker won and qualified in the 100, 200 and 400 while Andrew Glass claimed gold at regionals in the 110 and 300 hurdles.

Wheeling Park's 4×100, 4×200, 4×400 and shuttle hurdle relay teams claimed gold at regionals and earned them a spot.

Also competing in individual for the Wheeling Park boys are Jerrae Hawkins Jr. (100, 200); BriJaun Baylor (110 hurdles, long jump); Sincere Sinclair (100); Zarik Janeczko (400); Brady Miller (3200); Christian Sore (pole vault); Nate Lucas (pole vault); Shaheed Jackson-Mayfield (long jump); Ronell Chapman (long jump); Jacob Stewart (shot put) and Jaden Evans (discus).

The Patriots also qualified in the 4×800.

Brooke's Quinlin Blair won the high jump at regionals solidifying a spot in Charleston. Roger Gabbert will also represent the Bruins in the shot put as well as the 4×200.

Ashton Collett (high jump, long jump) and Mack Allen (1600) will represent John Marshall.

On the girls' side, Marlee Porter won three events (100, 200, 300 hurdles) at regionals.. Abbi Barki won the 400 at regionals and will represent the Patriots.

Wheeling Park also won the 4×200 and shuttle hurdles.

Kaylee Davis (100, 200); Lillian Hanna (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles); Sophie Abraham (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles); Merritt Delk (800); Jailah Walker (high jump) and Adrianna Fazzni (discus) will also go to Charleston for the Patriots.

The Patriots will also compete in the 4×100, 4×400 and 4×800.

For John Marshall, Camryn Mowder won the 100 hurdles and will also compete in the high jump. Elle Ranney claimed gold in the shot put.

Also competing for the Monarchs are Zara Zervos (400, 800) and Sierra Taylor (long jump). The relay teams at state for the Monarchs are 4×400 and shuttle hurdle.

For Brooke, Mara Pendergast won the high jump at regionals and will also compete in the 200. Abbey Horvath will also compete in the shot put.

The Brooke relay teams include 4×100, 4×200 and shuttle hurdle.

CLASS AA

The Oak Glen boys had a handful of regional champions in Isaiah Franklin (100, 200); Matthew Greenlief (400); Konnor Allison (800); Gage Patterson (long jump) and Jeremy Taylor (shot put).

The Golden Bears also claimed gold in three relays (4×100, 4×200, shuttle hurdle).

Also running at state for the Oak Glen boys are Tristan Laswson (100, 200); Tyler Mozingo (400); Mason Konchar (1600); Nick Gallo (3200); Dylan Conley (long jump) and Allison (1600).

The Golden Bears will also race in the 4×400 and 4×800 relays.

For Weir, Dom Guiddy won the regional discus throw.

Brayden Lawton (100, 200); Jonathan Howard (discus, shot put); Gage Reitter (100); Jamari Bass (100); Myles Rice (shot put) will also compete for the Red Riders as well as the 4×100, 4×200 and shuttle hurdle relay teams.

For the girls, Oak Glen's Izabelle Barganski (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles) and Kamela Ward (400) won their regional event along with the 4×400 relay team.

Other Golden Bears that are competing are Ashlyn Six (200, long jump); Ward (100); Samantha Love (200); Phoebe Molish (400); Sophia Arner (800); Gracie Wright (300 hurdles); Carson Barr (300 hurdles); Natasha Ward (long jump) and Mia Ridgway (shot put).

The relay teams are 4×100, 4×200 and 4×800.

Blaire McUmar won the 200 for Weir at regionals while Kendall Drobish claimed the discus.

McUmar will also run in the 100 for the Red Riders along with three relay teams (4×100, 4×200, shuttle hurdle).

CLASS A

The Magnolia boys will be represented by Jason Beisel, who won the 100, 200 and 400 in the regionals.

The 4×400 also claimed gold for the Blue Eagles.

Also competing for the Blue Eagles are Gavin Postlethwait (400, high jump, long jump); Gavin Herrick (400, 800); Brady Renner (1600); Logan Beegle (pole vault) and Austin Beverlin (long jump).

The other relay teams for the Blue Eagles are the 4×200, 4×800 and shuttle hurdles.

Wheeling Central's Aidan Scott won the 1600 and 3200 at regionals as well as the 4×100.

Cooper Blair (100) and Bobby Geyer (400) are also individual qualifiers.

The other Maroon Knights' relay team is 4×200.

For Paden City, it will be Zane Yeater (100); Shane Anderson (110 hurdles); Jasup Spragg (300 hurdles) representing their school. The Wildcats will also run in the shuttle hurdle.

Tyler Consolidated's 4×200 won the regional title. Other relay teams for the Silver Knights are 4x100and 4×400. Jackson Kibbey (200); Austin Timmons (400, 300 hurdles); Sage Landis (400, pole vault); Cody Jones (pole vault) and Jaden Holmes (shot put) will compete individually.

Madonna will compete in two relays (4×400, 4×800).

On the girls side, Magnolia's Mady Winters claimed two victories at regionals (shot put, discus). Also competing for the Blue Eagles are Jaci Rohde (100, long jump); Lauren Gaiser (high jump) and Julia Lilze (pole vault).

Magnolia will also compete in all five relay races.

For Paden City, Hope Weber (shot put, discus); Mallory Yeater (long jump) and Hallie McDonald (100 hurdle) will make the trip to Charleston.

The Wildcats will compete in the 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 relays.

For Madonna, Angela Spickard (100, 200); Kristina Lesho (800, 1600) and Sofia-Teresa DiBacco (400) will compete individually.

The Blue Dons' relay teams are the 4×400, 4×800 and shuttle hurdle.

For Tyler Consolidated, Jocelyn Foltz (100, 200, long jump); Trinity Kanz (high jump); Caitlyn Northcraft (high jump) and Sydney Deaton (discus) will compete individually.

The relay teams for the Silver Knights will be 4×100 and 4×200.

Leah Delaney will be the lone Hundred athlete making the trip to Charleston to compete in the shot put.
