Royals Get Past Pirates

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Andrew Benintendi hit a grand slam and drove in five runs, leading the Kansas City Royals to a 10-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.

Salvador Perez had two homers and three RBIs to help the Royals sweep the two-game series. Brady Singer (3-4) allowed five runs -- four earned -- and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Wil Crowe (0-4) took the loss. He gave up eight runs and eight hits in four-plus innings.

Adam Frazier, who led the National League with 40 hits in May, doubled twice for the Pirates.

Benintendi drove in the Royals' first run with a single in the first inning.

The Pirates scored three times in the third. Singer loaded the bases with no outs on an infield single, a walk and a hit batter.

An RBI single by Bryan Reynolds and sacrifice flies by Gregory Polanco and Ben Gamel knocked in the next two runs.

Kevin Newman singled and raced home when Michael Perez sent one to the wall in right-center for a double to give the Pirates a 4-1 lead in the fourth.

Perez drew the Royals to 4-3 with his 11th home run in the bottom half. Carlos Santana led off with a single. With one out, Perez launched a two-run drive into the Pirates' bullpen in left.

Benintendi's grand slam capped a five-run fifth. Crowe gave up a leadoff triple to Michael A. Taylor, then walked Nicky Lopez. Whit Merrifield singled in Taylor before Crowe walked Santana to load the bases. Benintendi sent his second career slam into the Royals' bullpen.

The Pirates scored in the sixth on Frazier's bloop double with two outs, but they left the bases loaded.

Perez's second home run came with one out in the seventh.

Taylor's sacrifice fly in the eighth provided the final run.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Pirates manager Derek Shelton said 3B Ke'Bryan Hayes (left wrist strain) is likely to return to the roster Thursday against Miami. Hayes has been out of the lineup since April 4.

Royals SS Adalberto Mondesi was not in the starting lineup after coming out of Monday's game with a "tweaked" left hamstring. Kansas City manager Mike Matheny said he wouldn't rule out an appearance by Mondesi in Tuesday's game, but he preferred to wait until Thursday with Wednesday's off day.

INDIANS 6, WHITE SOX 5

CLEVELAND (AP) -- AL MVP Jose Abreu grounded out with the bases loaded to blunt a ninth-inning rally against Cleveland closer James Karinchak, giving Shane Bieber and the Indians a win over the Chicago White Sox.

Bieber (6-3) allowed two earned runs in seven innings, striking out seven to beat the AL Central-leading White Sox for the fifth straight time. The reigning Cy Young winner is 3-0 with a 2.05 ERA in three starts against Chicago this season.

"All in all, I was pretty happy with the way I pitched," Bieber said. "I had to settle in and not let them get the best of me. So did James at the end, and down the road, these kind of outings can be beneficial for a young pitcher."

Down 6-3 in the ninth, Chicago scored twice as Zack Collins and Nick Madrigal hit RBI singles off Karinchak. A walk to Yoan Moncada loaded the bases for Abreu, who grounded out to shortstop to give Karinchak his seventh save.

"Abreu is probably the last guy you want up there in that situation," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "It's like I told (pitching coach Carl Willis) when he came up to bat, 'I think I like baseball, but I'm not sure right now.'"

Austin Hedges' two-run homer off Dylan Cease (3-2) landed on the porch in left field and gave the Indians a 5-3 lead in the fourth, scoring Bradley Zimmer.

Jose Ramirez's second double of the evening drove in Amed Rosario later in the frame, charging Cease with all six runs in 3 1/3 innings. Ramirez was removed from the game in the eighth as a precaution due to dehydration.

Harold Ramirez had two hits with two RBIs and a stolen base for Cleveland, which has won two in a row to pull within 2 1/2 games of Chicago.

The White Sox went up 3-2 on an unusual play in the second when Billy Hamilton scored after doubling home Jake Lamb and Zack Collins. Hamilton never stopped running, taking third on a throw and scoring on Hedges' fielding error at the plate.

"The ball came out of my glove and the fastest guy in the world was on third base in Hamilton," Hedges said, shaking his head. "You can't lose the ball like that or else he transports to the next base."

Josh Naylor and Harold Ramirez gave the Indians a 2-0 lead in the first with back-to-back RBI singles.

Chicago manager Tony La Russa remained two wins behind John McGraw's 2,763 for second place on the career list. The White Sox are 7-3 since May 24.

"We never quit and if we keep playing nine innings, good things will happen," La Russa said. "We've got that part covered and we're not going to lose it."

The Indians played their final home game under 40% crowd restrictions set by the Ohio Department of Health. Progressive Field will now be open to its full capacity of 34,830.

BALTIMORE (AP) --Pedro Severino and Maikel Franco both homered for the Orioles, who ended a 16-game head-to-head skid against Minnesota with a win.

YANKEES 5, RAYS 3, 11 INNINGS

NEW YORK (AP) -- Clint Frazier Frazier hit a game-ending, two-run homer with two outs in the 11th inning after making a game-saving catch in the eighth, lifting the slumping New York Yankees over the rival Tampa Bay Rays.

New York ended a four-game slide and beat Tampa Bay in the Bronx for the second time in 11 tries since the start of last season. The AL East-leading Rays had won 16 of 17 and are 4 1/2 games ahead of the third-place Yankees with two games left in this four-game series.

ASTROS 5, RED SOX 1

HOUSTON (AP) -- Luis Garcia threw a career-high seven innings, Jose Altuve homered and the Houston Astros beat the Boston Red Sox for their third straight victory.

Garcia (4-3) permitted one run and six hits, retiring 11 of 12 batters over one stretch. The right-hander struck out six and walked one in his fourth consecutive win.

Altuve led off the first with his eighth homer, a drive to left-center against Garrett Richards (4-4). It was Altuve's third leadoff homer this season.

Chas McCormick drove in Yordan Alvarez with a sacrifice fly in the fourth, and Houston opened a 5-1 lead with three runs in the seventh

Kyle Tucker, who had three hits, scored on an error by second baseman Marwin Gonzale. Carlos Correa drove in Myles Straw with a bases-loaded walk, and Alvarez had a run-scoring infield single.

Alvarez had two hits in his return to the lineup after missing five games with a sore right wrist. The Astros won despite going 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position.

Richards surrendered two runs and four hits in six innings. He has allowed three or fewer runs in each of his last four starts.

Boston pitchers walked eight, including Altuve three times. Alex Verdugo had two hits for the Red Sox.

PHILLIES 17, REDS 3

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Odubel Herrera and Andrew McCutchen each hit two of Philadelphia's seven home runs and the Phillies pummeled the Cincinnati Reds to end a three-game losing streak.

Matt Joyce capped the rout with a grand slam in the ninth off Reds infielder Alex Blandino, who was on the mound to help spare the bullpen.

NATIONALS 11, BRAVES 6

ATLANTA (AP) -- Ryan Zimmerman and Juan Soto each hit a two-run homer and the Washington Nationals overcame Stephen Strasburg's early exit to beat the Atlanta Braves.

Soto had three hits, drove in four runs and scored four times to lead Washington's 14-hit outburst.

The Nationals snapped their five-game losing streak even though Strasburg lasted only 1 1/3 innings. The right-hander left the game after William Contreras' liner hit his left arm near his glove. Strasburg's glove appeared to absorb at least some of the blow.

Strasburg picked up the ball and threw out Contreras at first base, but he was pulled following a visit from manager Dave Martinez and trainer Paul Lessard.

CUBS 4, PADRES 3

CHICAGO (AP) -- Patrick Wisdom hit his third homer in two games, Willson Contreras also went deep and the surging Chicago Cubs beat San Diego after Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. left with an injury.

Tatis exited because of right oblique tightness. He hit a fly to left field in the sixth inning and was replaced at shortstop in the bottom half by Ha-Seong Kim.

The NL Central-leading Cubs won for the eighth time in nine games and kept up their strong play coming off a 19-8 record in May.

TIGERS 10, BREWERS 7

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Eric Haase and Jonathan Schoop each hit two home runs, Miguel Cabrera had three RBI and the previously light-hitting Detroit Tigers beat the Milwaukee Brewers, ending Milwaukee's five-game winning streak.

Milwaukee's Kolten Wong and Tyrone Taylor also hit two homers apiece in a game that saw nine home runs.

BLUE JAYS 5, MARLINS 1

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- Vladimir Guerrero Jr. keyed a career-best four-hit outing with his majors-leading 17th home run and the Blue Jays beat the Miami Marlins.
