Wheeling Park Sweeps Class AAA Region One Track Meet at Brooke

WELLSBURG — The Wheeling Park boys and girls track teams will be going into Charleston on a positive note. Garnering many victories and automatic qualifiers, the Patriots swept an incredibly talented West Virginia Class AAA Region One Field Friday at Brooke High School. The boys claimed first place as they compiled 171 points, 32 points more than runner-up Morgantown. The girls’ field was a little closer, but in the end the Patriots’ 136 squeaked by Morgantown’s 129.

On the girls side, Marlee Porter won individual events in the 100 (12.58), 200 (26.06) and 300 hurdles (46.01). Abby Barki won the 400 for the Patriots (1:00.21). She was also on the winning 4×200 relay team with Audrey Lantz, Savannah Turner-Davis and Kaylee Davis (1:47.26). Ellie Reasbeck, Sophie Abraham, Lillian Hanna and Jocelynn Walker won the shuttle hurdles timing in at 1:08.74.

“The name of the game in regionals is survive and advance,” Wheeling Park girls coach Bryan Arbes said. “For the most part we did that. We did have some hiccups. But, we’re going to get through that. I think we’re going to pick it up in other areas, but all-in-all, everyone got through healthy. That’s the main thing.”

Placing second individually and receiving an automatic bid for the Patriots were Hanna (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles) and Adrianna Fazzini (discus). The 4×100 relay of Lantz, Turner-Davis, Abbi Barki and Kaylee Davis also finished second as well as the 4×400 (Barki Maya Taggart, Porter and Mia Zecca).

Abraham finished third in the 100 and 300 hurdles while Jailah Walker claimed bronze in the high jump.

John Marshall had a pair of individual wins in Camryn Mowder (100 hurdles, 16.57) and Elle Ranney (shot put, 34-07.5). Mowder also secured second in the high jump while Zara Zervos took third in the 400.

Mowder and Zervos were both on the shuttle hurdle with Brielle Bumgardner and Madelyn Cisar, which placed third.

For Brooke, Mara Pendergrast won the high jump (5-02). She also finished second in the 200.

Abbey Horvath placed third in the shot put as well as the Bruins’ 4×100 relay team (Pendergrast, Makenzie Stevens, Estella Lahita and Melyn Bachinski).

For the boys, Torrence Walker put forth another strong effort. Not only did he capture the 100 (10.73) and 200 (21.53) titles, he won the 400 clocking in at 49.47. Andrew Glass also won multiple individual events for the Patriots as he crossed the line first in the 110 hurdles (15.39) and 300 hurdles (41.10). He was also the anchor on the winning shuttle hurdle team. BriJaun Baylor, Ronnell Chatman and Christian Bryan were also on the team that timed in at 1:00.89.

Wheeling Park also claimed victories in the 4×100 (Alex Canestraro, Sincere Sinclair Christian Sorge and Jerrae Hawkins Jr., 44.15); 4×200 (Canestraro, Sinclair, Christian Bryan and Hawkins Jr.1:32.55) and 4×400 (Luke Dunaway, Scott Petticord, Bryan and Zarik Janeczko, 3:33.54).

“Region One is a very competitive region,” Wheeling Park boys coach Chris Dunaway said. “You look at University and Morgantown, their distance is incredible. Bridgeport coming into its first year and their fun to watch. With Buckhannon-Upshur, and obviously the teams that have been here for a long time with Brooke John Marshall and Preston, it’s exciting to win. We knew coming it was going to be a battle. I was really happy with the way the guys that came out and competed on a hot day.”

Park also received automatic bids for Hawkins Jr. (second place) and Sinclair (third) in the 100. Hawkins also claimed second in the 200. Also placing second for Wheeling Park were Baylor (110 hurdles), Sorge (pole vault), Shaheed Jackson-Mayfield (long jump) and Jacob Stewart (shot put).

Claiming third place was the 4×800 team of Quinn Jacquez, Zach Workman, Brady Murdy and Preston Core along while Jaden Evans received bronze in the discus.

Brooke secured two automatic qualifiers as Quinlin Blair won the high jump (5-10) while Roger Gabbert placed third in the shot put.
