CHARLESTON — It’s not the March Madness but it’s just as sweet.

West Virginia University alumni team, Best Virginia defeated D2 on Monday night by a final score of 63-51 in The Basketball Tournament to advance to the Sweet 16.

In the round of 16, Best Virginia will play on Wednesday at 9 p.m. and will take on Team 23, which defeated Marshall University alumni squad, Herd That 74-71 with a 3-pointer by J.D. Sword to finish the game.

For Best Virginia, it was a much better start than its second exhibition game and first TBT contest.

Kevin Jones bucketed seven points in the opening frame and Best Virginia led 22-12 heading into the second.

It wasn’t until then that D2 began to cut into the deficit.

In fact, D2 outscored Best Virginia 14-8 in the second quarter and only trailed 30-26 at halftime.

It was an even third period with Best Virginia taking a 45-42 edge into the final frame.

The Mountaineers stood strong in the fourth with a 53-44 advantage as the Elam Ending began.

Best Virginia never looked back on its way to a 63-51 triumph.

Jones paved the way with 12 points and six rebounds in the win, while teammates Tarik Phillip, Jamel Morris and Nathan Adrian all chipped in with 11 points apiece

A recent professional contract signed by Sagaba Konate will not allow him to play in The Basketball Tournament.
