Wheeling Park Volleyball Opens With 3-2 Triumph
WHEELING — The Patriots and Bruins went to five sets in a thriller at The Palace on the Hill on Thursday in the season opener but it was Wheeling Park emerging victorious over Brooke by counts of 25-22, 25-16, 20-25, 13-25 and 16-14.
Olivia Albrecht amassed 25 kills to lead the Patriots’ charge, while Caylin Angel turned in 36 digs and a pair of aces.
Emily Braden added 13 digs and four aces in the win.
Wheeling Central tops Weir
WEIRTON — The Weir volleyball team fell Thursday in three sets to Wheeling Central, 9-25, 21-25, 24-25.
The Red Riders got 13 assists, five digs and an ace from Mea Kaufman, eight kills, two aces and four digs from Mallory Rosnik, five kills, an ace and five digs from Ziona Barnes and five digs and an ace from Lydia Mascio.
Red Devils Sweep Ferry
ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Red Devils bounced back from a loss on Tuesday to sweep invading Martins Ferry on John Jenkins Court.
The Red Devils prevailed by scores of 25-16, 25-14 and 25-14.
Leading the way on the stat sheet for the Devils was Lydia Wees, who had eight kills and twoblocks. Lauren Waseman had five aces and four kills. Senior Alexis Thoburn had five kills and eight digs.
The Purple Riders were led by Sydney Koller’s three kills and five digs. Lilly Masters had four kills and three blocks, while Riley Doyle added five digs and four points.
Barnesville sweeps Buckeye Local
BARNESVILLE — The Shamrocks picked up their third straight win by knocking off Buckeye Local, 25-19, 25-20 and 25-17.
The Shamrocks were led by Ava McFarland, who had seven points, 26 assists, six digs and four kills. Halle Markovich had 11 kills, seven points, two aces and two blocks. Jalyn Skinner added 13 points and an ace. Kynlie Cline was charted for five points and 17 digs. Marly Keiser had seven points, five kills and an ace.
Bridgeport sweeps St. John Academy
BELLAIRE — The Bulldogs notched their first win of the season, sweeping the Irish by scores of 25-10, 25-12 and 25-11.
Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Markiee McCormack, who had 17 points, seven aces and four assists. Josalyn Canter added three aces, three kills and a block, while Haylee Conaway had six points. Campbell Kropka had seven points, while Kaylee Bain added three kills and five poins. Erica Marling posted five kills and a block.
Indian Creek sweeps Harrison Central
WINTERSVILLE — The Redskins swept the Huskies Thursday evening by scores of 25-14, 25-15 and 25-16.
Leading the way for Harrison Central was McKayla Dunkle, who had 10 kills and five blocks. Logan Johnson handed out 11 assists, while Mady Butler posted eight digs and four points.
For Indian Creek, Olivia Wukelic had eight aces, seven kills and a block, Kailey McMillion had 10 kills, Carley Penner had four kills, 16 assists, two digs and two aces and Brooke Grant had seven assists, two digs and two aces.
Frontier sweeps River
NEW MATAMORAS — The Cougars handed the invading Pilots their second straight loss to open the season by scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 26-24.
Rilyn Haught led the Pilots with four kills, four digs and five points. Hannah Raper added three kills, five digs and eight points. Chloe Honeycutt had four kills and six points.
Monarchs Squeak by South
GLEN DALE — It took five sets but John Marshall came away with a 25-14, 21-25, 23-25, 25-20 and 15-5 victory over Parkersburg South.
St. Clairsville sweeps quadrangular
WHEELING — St. Clairsville posted an impressive score of 146 to cruise to a quadrangular sweep at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course Thursday.
The Red Devils toppled Barnesville, which had been undefeated in Ohio Valley Golf League play, by 23 shots. Magnolia and Bridgeport also took part.
St. Clairsville was led by match medalist Brodi Foster, who shot a 1-under round of 35. Andrew Abel was second overall and for the Red Devils with a 1-over, 36.
Indian Creek edges Buckeye
YORKVILLE — Indian Creek picked up a victory in prep golf at BecWood Hills Golf Course Thursday afternoon, shooting a 174.
The Redskins were four shots clear of Buckeye Local.
Leading the way was Buckeye Local’s Jacob Berry, who fired a round of 40 to take medalist honors.
He was followed closely by Creek’s Luke Merriman and Logan Kuczykowski with scores of 41. Noah Tweedy shot a 45 and Connor Garbade a 47.
JM girls topple River, Monroe
WHEELING — The Monarchs swept a triangular over River and Monroe Central Thursday afternoon.
The Monarchs posted a 209, which was 15 shots better than the Pilots and 51 better than the Seminoles.
John Marshall’s Lauren Tekely and Payten Clark both posted a round of 48 to share the medalist honors.
Red Knights win five-set battle with CCHS
TORONTO — The Toronto volleyball team improved to 2-0 by winning a five-set match with rival Catholic Central Thursday evening, 20-25, 25-15, 25-21, 21-25, 15-9.
The Red Knights got five aces and 20 kills and 24 digs from Hannah Dobbs, 28 assists, six kills, four blocks and 16 digs from Andrea Reeves, 71 digs from Taylie Thomas, 13 digs, nine assists and five aces from Brianna Burruss and 11 blocks and three kills from Leah Price.
Linsly 8, John Marshall 0
GLEN DALE — Ashton Adams turned in three goals and one assist, while Stefan Mihajlovic netted two goals and Linsly routed John Marshall.
Wes Palmer tallied a goal and an assist, as did Seth Cho.
Quinn McKenzie scored for the Cadets and Jackson Gilbert and Alvaro Abad dished out assists.

WEIRTON — Mattia Moledni scored less than four minutes into the match and the lead stood up as Weir edged Steubenville Central.
