Debbie Green 5K Is Set For This Weekend

By Cody Tomer 2 min read

WHEELING -- The streets of downtown Wheeling will once again be buzzing this weekend as the Debbie Green Memorial 5K, presented by Kalkreuth, makes its triumphant return to Heritage Port.

Last year, race director Ron Green was forced to cancel the event due to COVID-19 precautions and restrictions.

However, the race will be back on Saturday morning with the Green Mile starting at 9 a.m.

On Sunday, kids will show off their speed at 8 a.m. for Debbie's Dash, followed by the main event -- the Debbie Green Memorial 5K run/walk at 9 a.m.

People can register to participate online at www.debbiegreen5k.com or they can register on Saturday or Sunday from 7 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. inside WesBanco Arena. Online registration ends at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Proceeds from the event will benefit a local recipient who suffers from leukemia or Pediatric cancer.

"We're excited to get back to doing our thing," Ron Green said. "Regardless of how things have gone, COVID doesn't mean that kids stop getting cancer. With the help of others, our group is working to help with that. Whoever comes will get a first class event."

COVID couldn't cancel this year's event but Ron Green is taking every precaution.

"There are a lot of changes this year because of COVID and we had to do a lot of things differently with a lot of precautions so we can have a safe event," he said. "We're having morning races this year because of the time of the year we are having it and we didn't want to conflict with football games but next year we are doing our best to have the race back to its normal weekend of Aug. 6 and 7."

There has also been a lot of construction throughout Wheeling in the past year but Ron Green says it will not disrupt the course one bit.

"The course will be the same as it's always been," he said. "There are no closures or anything. The construction crew has been great to make sure the event goes off without a glitch."
