SISTERSVILLE -- Behind 252 first-half yards and three special teams scores, Tyler Consolidated defeated Calhoun County 46-14 at home in a rare bout of Monday night football.
The Silver Knights (2-2) scored four touchdowns on offense, two on special teams and added a safety as the cherry on top of the victory. Receiver Jayden Helmick was electric for the Knights, catching a 75-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Trenton Huffman, returning a punt 60 yards for a touchdown and returning a kickoff 55 yards for another score.
"Jayden's an athletic kid and if he gets an opportunity he's got enough speed he can get by you," Tyler coach Ryan Walton said. "He's also a smart kid, he can get open when he needs to. He's just an athletic kid and he makes plays when he's on the field."
It was Calhoun's (1-2) defense who opened the scoring at Knights Stadium. On Tyler's first drive of the game, Huffman attempted to throw a screen pass that fell incomplete at the feet of his receiver. Thinking it was a forward pass, none of the Knights made an attempt at the ball, but the referees had not blown the play dead, allowing Calhoun's Grant Sterns to scoop the ball up and run it 62 yards into the endzone.
"We got something from all three phases but I just felt like we left some stuff on the field," Walton said. "We had some guys who maybe weren't focused and luckily it didn't come back to bite us.
"We're tickled to death to get a win, anytime you can get a win you'll take it no matter what."
Following that blunder, Tyler's varsity offense was close to perfect the rest of the night. Huffman found Ty Walton for a seven-yard touchdown on their next drive and Helmick returned a Calhoun punt for a touchdown to end the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Huffman found Walton again from seven yards out and later hit Helmick for a 75-yard score. Running back Sean Winfrey scored from eight yards out, Raustyn Wade blocked a Calhoun punt into the endzone for a safety and Helick returned the ensuing safety punt for his third long touchdown of the night. All of that added up to a 30-point quarter for Tyler and a 46-6 halftime lead.
"At times we played lights out, at other times we were lackadaisical," Walton said. "We've got to improve, you can't play like that every game because it'll come back to bite you. We've got to have a standard and work to maintain it."
Tyler's varsity team did not play in the second half. Huffman finished 6 of 7 for 134 yards and three touchdowns, Winfrey ran eight times for 96 yards and a score and Walton caught three passes for 24 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Helmick finished with 93 receiving yards on two catches, a receiving touchdown and his two special teams scores.
On the flip side,Calhoun could not get much going against Tyler's defense. Red Devils running backs carried the ball 23 times for 66 yards. Quarterback Owen Taylor completed 9 of 17 passes for 136 yards and threw a second half touchdown to Ian Richards, but was sacked five times.
Case Landis and Caleb Strode both finished with two sacks for Tyler, Walton and Tristan Tuttle combined for the other.
Sterns caught six passes for 58 yards to lead Calhoun's receivers and Richards caught a 41-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
The Knights will not get a full week off before their next game, traveling to Wirt County to play Friday night.
"We're going to come in tomorrow in helmets and shoulder pads and get after it," Walton said. "Coaches will be watching film tonight and tomorrow and we'll approach it without a Monday. We've got three days to prepare and get after it."
