Four former Bruins were honored at Brooke High School's 32nd Annual Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The 2021 class included Les Shaffer (basketball, class of 1971), Kelley (Richardson) Mills (basketball, class of 200), wrestling coach Ron Mauck and baseball coach Perry West.
Shaffer graduated as Brooke's all-time leading scorer in 1971 before going on to become a three-year letterwinner at Fairmont State College. He still ranks in the top 30 in all-time points scored at Brooke. He was also a member of the 20-0, undefeated 1975-76 Fairmont State team.
Mills scored over 1,000 points during her career at Brooke, was a two-time All-OVAC selection and was selected to the All-State basketball team in 1999-2000. She went on to be a four-year letterwinner at Bethany College, where she was honored as the 2003-04 PAC Player of the Year.
Mauck coached Brooke's wrestling team from 1969-73 and served as athletic director from 1990-97. His long list of honors includes inductions into the Brooke County Schools Hall of Fame, the OVAC Hall of Fame and the WV Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
In 2006, the OVAC wrestling tournament was named in his honor.
West served as both Brooke's baseball coach and an assistant coach on the football team. He finished with 460 career wins in baseball and won Coach of the Year Awards in 1987 and 1992.
He also served as the director of OVAC baseball from 2000-19 and founded the OVAC Baseball Prospect Showcase.
