Jets Cruise Past Ferry

By SETH STASKEY 3 min read

MORRISTOWN -- Martins Ferry came into Monday's game against Union Local determined to take away Jets junior Reagan Vinskovich.

Considering Vinskovich recorded just three field goals and eight total points after erupting for 31 on Saturday, the Purple Riders plan worked quite well.

However, the Purple Riders didn't account for the production that Vinskovich's teammates would provide.

And it was more than plenty as the Jets cruised to their third straight victory by a 54-13 score.

"Everything, for us, goes through Reagan and they just took her away, which was a good move by (Ferry), but we had some other people make shots and if you can do that ...," Union Local head coach Scooter Tolzda said. "I thought we did a good job of sharing the ball and playing unselfishly."

With seemingly all of the Riders collapsing onto Vinskovich in the post, the Jets guards had plenty of opportunities.

Union Local dialed up eight bonus goals and received a solid, 10-point outing from junior guard Emily Kellaway, who had been averaging just over a point game in the first four contests of the season.

"I was glad to see that from Emmy," Tolzda said. "I thought she had a really good game. Ferry wasn't guarding her and Fort Frye didn't guard her (on Saturday) and she needed to get some confidence because we're going to need her to get some buckets or else other teams are going to (guard) us like that."

Kellaway wasn't the only other player to get going against the Riders. Talented junior Torre Kildow, who was held without a field goal on Saturday, responded with a team-high 14 points. Senior Keira Gregor added seven and senior Hannah Merritt hit two triples in the first half for six.

During the first half, when the Jets turned a 5-4 methodically paced game in the middle of the first quarter into a 33-7 half-time rout, the Jets had eight players score.

While the Jets have now won three straight since an 0-2 start, the Purple Riders' woes continue. Ferry has now dropped three in a row since its 2-0 start.

"We did exactly what we wanted to do (defensively), but we don't get rebounds, loose balls and we looked slow and lethargic," lamented Martins Ferry head coach Dave Reasbeck. "And we scored 13 points, which is just rock bottom. We (accomplished) our defensive goals and executed our game plan, but 13 points? That's not good."

The Riders knocked in only four field goals and continued to struggle at the foul line to a tune of 4 of 12. No Ferry player scored more than four.

"I don't know if we were playing good defense, they shot bad or it was a combination of both, but they missed a lot of shots," Tolzda said.
