WHEELING — A trio of local kids will have a rare opportunity this week when the Tri-State Elite Red team travels to Tampa, Florida to play in the Super Y League Finals on Dec. 10-14.

Tri-State Elite Red is an under-12 girls’ soccer team made up of players from West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania. They pull players from Beadling Soccer Club, Century Soccer Club, Soccer Vision Academy and Wheeling’s FC Alliance.

Three area girls play on the team in Lakin Chambers, Maggie Miller and Elah-Grace Konkle. They are coached by Bill Konkle.

Tri-State Elite went 9-0-1 during its three-week season back in July, winning the Super Y League’s MidWest bracket and earning a trip to the finals in Florida.

“It’s real exciting,” Konkle said. “At the beginning of the season, the kids knew it was a possibility if we did well. Once we started playing and realized we were doing pretty well, the kids really started to get excited about it and made it their goal.”

The team scored 40 goals in its 10 games this summer and only allowed 10.

Eight Under-12 girls’ teams will travel to the finals in Florida and be organized into two four-team brackets. Tri-State Elite will play against teams from Virginia, Texas and Michigan in their bracket.

“It’s fun that gives them an opportunity to see the different teams that are out there from other states,” Konkle said.

Tri-State Elite has sent teams to finals in years past, but never in this age group. Konkle said the team has been excited about the trip ever since they clinched their spot in July.

“All the girls play on their own soccer clubs (in the Fall), so everybody has been talking about it and getting excited,” Konkle said.

Other players on the team are Adalyn Manzo, Brynn Busch, Gabby Kim, Gemma Levy, Mia McCarthy, Neeve Graham, Rachel Lough, Reagan Aston-Reese, Sarah Coffman and Sydney Myers.
