Blue Eagles Get Smith First Win
NEW MARTINSVILLE — It was not the prettiest win, but it was a win nonetheless as Magnolia defeated Valley 9-7. It was the Blue Eagles’ first win of the season and the first in the career for new head coach John Smith.
Magnolia jumped out to a 9-1 lead after four innings, but a six-run top of the fifth by the Lumberjacks put the outcome in doubt. That was the last of the scoring, however, as Matthew Anderson nailed down the final out on the mound.
Starting pitcher Kaleb Starkey struck out 13 and allowed just one run in five innings of work and also added a single, double, RBI, two runs scored and four stolen bases on offense. Anderson, Brady Dinardo and Kolbee Cecil drove in a run each.
Tyler Consolidated 8-10, Wirt County 0-0
SISTERSVILLE — The Silver Knights scored 18 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Wirt County.
Ty Walton was masterful on the mound in game one, racking up a dozen punchouts in five innings of work while allowing just one hit. Tyler Ferrell closed out the game with two clean frames. On offense, Walton supplied a hit and two RBI while his batterymate, Zade Billings smacked a triple. Jayden Helmick also drove in a pair of runs without even registering a hit. Finally, Carson Gorby knocked in two with a single. Tyler won game two with the mercy rule, 10-0.
Martins Ferry 11, Buckeye Trail 5
OLD WASHINGTON — The Purple Riders started what they hope to be a memorable season with an impressive road win over the Warriors.
Martins Ferry received solid pitching from Baron Lucy, who earned the win by working four innings before giving way to the bullpen. He had six strikeouts and a walk.
Hayden Smith supplied the offense with a three-run home run. Colin Snedeker added a home run, single and two RBI, while Brayden Maine had three singles and two RBI.
Central Crossing 3, Shadyside 2, 9 innings
SHADYSIDE — The homestanding Tigers welcomed the Division I school from suburban Columbus to town and it turned into an epic.
The hosts nursed a 1-0 lead until the top of the seventh when Central Crossing pushed a run across to force extras and then eventually got two in the ninth to escape Belmont County with the win over the now 2-1 Tigers.
Shadyside’s Mason VanNest and Cole Micker each had a RBI single.
Cameron 12, River 2
CAMERON — The Dragons handed the debuting Pilots a decisive loss in six innings on Tuesday.
Nathan Haeberle had two hits and three RBI for the Dragons as Mason DeBolt struck out four batters in three innings. River received a RBI single from Finn Bowers.
Softball
John Marshall 4, Edison 1
GLEN DALE — Kadence Pettit was dominant on the mound, striking out 15 while scattering four hits and two walks across seven innings.
The Monarchs scored on RBI singles by Adrianna Skrynski and Alexis Cumberledge and a home run from Ryleigh Morgan.
The Wildcats scored a run in the top of the first, but their pitchers combined to allow 11 free passes in the loss.
Tyler Consolidated 15, Wirt County 0
SISTERSVILLE — Tyler put up seven runs in the first and eight in the third to cruise to a 15-0 victory over Wirt County in three innings.
Braden Wall led the charge with a single, double and four RBI. Leah Loudin also hit a double to go with two singles and two RBI. Tanley McEndowney scorched a triple and also drove in two. Audrey Dennis and Ramana Rice also both collected two hits and two RBI.
In the circle, Wall scattered two hits across the three innings while registering seven strikeouts.
Wheeling Central 14, Clay-Battelle 0
WHEELING — Brooke Reynolds and Shayna Beegle combined for five shutout innings in the circle as the Maroon Knights defeated the visiting CeeBees 14-0 in five innings.
Josann Frizell had a double and single at the plate as Ashlee Baker and Reynolds also collected multiple hits.
Brooke 6, Beaver Local 2
WELLSBURG — Baylei Jones gave up two runs in the second but nothing after as the Bruins defeated visiting Beaver Local 6-2.
Jones also added three doubles and three RBI at the plate to complete her impressive day. Angelina Lippoli hit a solo home run and Maddie Brown and Kameryn Eckels both had two singles and an RBI.
Ella Neff had a single, double and two RBI for Beaver Local.
Barnesville 8, Buckeye Local 4
BARNESVILLE — The Shamrocks opened the season impressively with a hard-earned win over an improved Panthers club on Tuesday at Memorial Park.
The Shamrocks received a triple, single and two RBI from Lilly Welch. Savanna Robinson had a single and two RBI, while Jayln Skinner had two singles and a RBI.
The Panthers received a triple and two RBI from Isabella Hepburn. Alexa Williams had a triple, single and two RBI.
Martins Ferry 15, Buckeye Trail 2
OLD WASHINGTON — The Purple Riders shook off any early season rust by pounding out 15 hits and scoring a lop-sided win in six innings.
Martins Ferry had a hit in every spot of the batting order except one. Leading the way was senior Maria Clark, who went for two singles, a home run and a RBI.
Taylor Bell added two singles, a double and drove in three. Hunter Pollock donated a single and double while driving in a run. Nevaeh Hall had three singles and a RBI. Kaylynn Zinn had a double and two RBI.
Beallsville 4, Magnolia 3
NEW MARTINSVILLE — The Blue Devils picked up their first win of the season on Tuesday, toppling the Blue Eagles by a run.
Beallsville received quality pitching and hitting from talented freshman Kaylee Hagan. She had two doubles and a like number of RBI. She also worked the route in the circle with four strikeout and just one walk.
Hallie Bommer had a single and RBI, while Jaycee Huffman had a triple, single and a RBI.
Tennis
Linsly 6, Parkersburg South 1
PARKERSBURG — The Cadets had an impressive showing on the road, downing the Patriots 6-1.
Rachel Ekanem picked up a 8-0 win in top singles while Ava Bartlett (9-7), Olivia Rosenthal (8-2) and Kate Bondarchuk (8-4) all also won their individual matches.
Ekanem and Bartlett won 8-3 in top doubles while Grace Ridenhour and Sofia Robterson won 9-8 in No. 3 doubles. Parkersburg South picked up an 8-1 win in No. 2 doubles.
Track and Field
ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Red Devil Stadium hosted a five-team track meet Tuesday evening as the season got under way.
Bellaire senior Colt Sechrest got his season going impressively, winning both the shot put (49-2) and the discus (179-5).
Big Reds’ sophomore Mayson Sochor was a double winner in the hurdles. He won the highs in 15.90 and the intermediates in 46.44.
The only double winner on the girls’ side was St. Clairsville’s Haven Brak. She won the long jump at 15-2 and the 200 in 27.48.
