Bruney, Marvin To Be Enshrined in OVAC HOF

WHEELING — A two-sport prep standout and member of unbeaten high school and college football teams plus a multiple three-sport honoree have been selected for induction into the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Hall of Fame.

Tabbed for induction from the decade of the 1960’s are Bob Bruney of Martins Ferry and Gary (Tony) Marvin of Wheeling High School. They will be enshrined at the 18th annual ceremony on August 13.

The athletes selected for the decade of the 1950’s will be announced next weekend.

Bruney and Marvin join previously announced honorees for the Class of 2022 in Steubenville’s Courtney Snyder, Sistersville’s Richard Summers, Oak Glen’s Jeff Woofter, Buckeye Trail’s Lori Heady, Wheeling Central’s Curtis McGhee, Cambridge’s Darin Ford, River’s D. J. Duke, Barnesville’s Stephanie Morgan and Steubenville Catholic’s Teddi Jo Maslowski.

Here’s a capsule look at the latest selections:

BOB BRUNEY, Martins Ferry (Class of 1960)–He was a football-wrestling standout for the Purple Riders before joining the Ohio State University football program.

Known as “Bullet Bob”, the 5-foot-9, 165-pound two-way football back averaged six yards a carry for the 10-0 record Ferry team which won OVAC Class AA honors in 1959 and was ranked 9th in the Ohio largest Class AA poll. He earned All-Eastern Ohio honors, second team All-OVAC and honorable mention on the largest Class AA All-Ohio picks at defensive back.

In wrestling, he was a standout on the second and third wrestling teams at the school which were coached by Hall of Famer John (Corky) Vrotsos. As a junior, he was OVAC runnerup at 145 pounds before improving as a senior to OVAC 154-pound champion, district titlist and third place in the Ohio championships. The team senior co-captain sported a 22-1 record.

He went on to play football at OSU where he earned two varsity letters as a defensive back after being a sophomore member of the 1961 team which went 8-0-1, won the Big Ten Conference title, and was ranked No. 2 nationally in both wire service polls.

After college, he served as Ferry’s head wrestling coach (1976-77), football coach (1974-78) and athletic director (1985-94). He was a wrestling official for 17 years and is inducted into the Martins Ferry Athletic Hall of Fame and the school Wrestling Hall of Fame. He received the OVAC’s Mr. Mat award in 1995.

His Ferry football coaching record was 26-24 after coaching Ironton High (1966-71) to a 29-29-2 mark including 9-1 in his final season.

He is deceased.

GARY (TONY) MARVIN, Wheeling High (Class of 1962)–One of the most honored prep athletes in Wildcat history, he earned nine letters as a three-sport regular and served as team co-captain in football, basketball and track.

In basketball, he scored 1,399 career points (22.5 avg.) in three seasons, one of the top two totals in school history. As a senior, he averaged 25.0 points and earned 1st Team all-class “Big All-State” plus Class AAA and UPI All-State. He was 1st team All-OVAC Class AAA captain and co-captain of the All-City team. As a junior, he averaged 22.1 ppg on an 18-7 record team which won sectional and regional titles to qualify for the state event, where he was all-tournament. He earned 1st Team All-OVAC, All-City and 3rd team all-class “Big All-State. As a sophomore, he averaged 20.3 points and earned 2nd team All-OVAC, honorable mention all-class “Big All-State” and was the only sophomore on the 1st Team All-City.

In football, the 5-foot-11, 145-pound two-way back was selected Mr. Football and Wildcat team MVP as a senior when he was 1st team All-OVAC largest Class AAA, 2nd team All-Valley “Big School”, 2nd Team All-State “AAA” and captain of All-City team. As a junior, he was 2nd team All-OVAC “AAA” and All-City after being honorable mention All-City as a sophomore.

He blossomed as a senior in track when he was the leading scorer in the all-class OVAC Track Meet with 17 points, the 2nd highest total in 20 meets at the time. He won the 440-yard and 220-yard sprints, placed 2nd in the 100 and tied for 3rd in the high jump. He also won titles at the City Meet, Steel Valley League Meet, and the state regionals before placing 4th in the 440 at the state Class AAA meet in Charleston. He earned All-Valley Track honors.

At Marshall, he was a basketball walk-on and competed on the freshman team.

After college, he was a long-time Ohio County basketball coach/assistant coach in junior high, junior varsity and at Wheeling Park High School. He resides in the St. Clairsville area.
