PINE GROVE — Baseball has perhaps the richest history of any sport.
Every night at the ballpark could allow fans an opportunity to witness something they’ve never seen before.
Hundred pitcher Christian Fluharty did something of that nature on Monday night as he struck out 21 batters and walked none en route to throwing a no-hitter in a 6-0 triumph over Valley.
Altogether, Fluharty faced 22 batters and was only one hit batsman away from firing a perfect game that would have included all strikeouts. The defense had no errors because the opposing offense never put the ball in play.
“About halfway through the game I realized I had a no-hitter and that they hadn’t put the ball in play,” Fluharty said. “I was confident though. I had my team and my coaches behind me keeping me calm and my friends and family were there cheering me on.”
Fluharty worked all offseason long and his diligent effort paid off, especially with two pitches in particular.
“My fastball and slider were about all I threw,” Fluharty said. “I worked a lot in the offseason because baseball is a pretty big hobby of mine.”
When the final out was recorded, a called-third strike of course, Fluharty took in the moment.
“It was amazing,” he said. “I remember getting that last call and my whole team rushed toward me and everybody in the crowd was cheering. I’m just so thankful to have my teammates and coaches behind me cheering me on and giving me the push to do it. It was a great feeling.”
It was a moment that his coach, Jason Sleeth, will not soon forget.
“He’s a good kid and he deserves this,” Sleeth said. “He was cruising along and was only at 68 pitches at the end of the fifth. That’s when I started thinking about what was at stake. It was a once-in-a-lifetime game and I am very proud of him.”
The battery of Fluharty and catcher Evert Johnson obviously were on the same page defensively, but the two teammates also led the team on offense.
Johnson blasted a two-run home run and Fluharty provided four hits — two singles and two doubles — to go with two RBI in the victory.
